NGD: Ibanez SZ Goodness

After trying out several other used guitars I had my eyes on, I went with the SZ720FM in the end. Much better value, better condition, and just a better fit.

It has Duncan/Ibanez designed pickups exclusive for these models (except for the first year, 2004). That puts mine in the 2005-2007 range of production. The bridge has poles like the Screamin' Demon (screw/hex) and the neck has the traditional screw/slug configuration. Controls are 2 volumes, 1 tone and 3-way toggle. With the toggle in the middle, it splits both pickups giving a nice Stratty-like tone. The body is pretty thick, if not the same thickness as a LP. The neck also has some beef to it. It feels almost like the neck on the SG Classic I had; not a massive baseball bat and not slim. It's been played but still in very good condition. A good polishing and lemon oil on the fingerboard cleaned it up nice. All I had to do besides that was fresh strings and a setup.

I know there's been lots of threads and discussion on good marriages of Les Pauls and Strats. IMO, I think this is a great one on a budget. Thick slab of mahogany with an arched flame top (most likely veneer), maple neck, 25.1 inch scale, 3x3 tuners on tilt headstock, string through body, set neck, rosewood fingerboard, dual humbuckers, body and neck binding, gut cut. There are so many things from both styles that are in this guitar. Weight is 8 1/2" pounds, not a feather and not a boat anchor. It feels solid and plays great.

Highly recommended.

Very nice indeed.;) I would say this guitar comes close to an LP & Strat in many aspects. I like the idea of having two volume knobs because in gives you more control over your tone in the middle position. The FB inlays look real sweet and it matches with the guitar perfectly. The weight of my '06 Epiphone LP Standard is just under 10 lbs. so the weight of your guitar seems more ideal. BTW, how much did you pay for this masterpiece?:scratchch

Ibanez has an annoying habit of dumping cool models after a few years.

Wish they'd reissue Proline, '86 spec Roadstar, and Radius...

Re: NGD: Ibanez SZ Goodness

These SZ's are great, and that one is a beauty. And it still has the protective film on the cavity cover, too!

Glad you pulled the trigger. Happy NGD!

Thanks guys. It's sure a fun guitar to play.

$329. Talked them down a bit based on ones that sold on eBay recently.

The TR cover had the protective film on it too until I removed it the other night while adjusting the TR.

No plan on replacing pickups yet but if I do, first thought is a set of PG's.

I used to want one of those REAL bad back in the day.

I've never even gotten my hands on one yet.

Re: NGD: Ibanez SZ Goodness

I have a sweet blue 520. One of my favorite guitars. The Duncan/Ibanez pickups are really good to my ears. Im trying to score a p90 Ghostrider on CL.

And I don't understand why. This guitar is such an amazing deal. I love Strats and I like Les Pauls, but there are some features of both I like together. This guitar captures it really well. I like just walking around and playing it unplugged (kinda have to lately anyway). If anything, I'm getting my fingers back in playing shape from months of time off.

I don't understand why.

It's between the designers, the accountants and the bulk of customers. In a mass production situation, you either go with the flow and count your numbers carefully, or lose market share and sales and heaps of money.

Regarding your guitar, I think about it as somewhat reimagining Paul Reed Smith's recipe. Let's make up a guitar somewhat halfway between the Strat and the Les Paul, combining the features of the two. Optimize for comfort but don't forget to give it some bling cause plain looks fell out of fashion. Make it affordable and we'll sell it to those undecided between gibson and fender types (or wanting bits of both rolled into one), to PRS fans on a budget, to some of Schecter's potential customers, to Marty Friedman's followers.

Yeah, makes sense.

Essentially. It's why the RG line has been expanded considerably over the last 10 years, so there are now RGTs, RGAs, 7 strings, 8 strings, Genesis reissues. People want RGs, so Ibanez has obliged.
