A buddy of mine is giving me a Squire Strat that he has no use for. Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, wait, does anyone even know what that means anymore? But I digress. What are the stock pickups like in those? Does GFS or someone make a not too expensive set that would be worth throwing in there if I wind up thinking that the stock pups suck? Want to keep it single coil, but would consider lower noise/noiseless options but don't want rails.

People would check the teeth and mouth of a horse to determine age(tooth wear) and health spots in the mouth corresponding with disease.

The bullet and affinity strats have cheap pickups with ceramic magnets glued to the bottom
But so do standard Mexican strats

The GFS neovin pickups are noiseless and use neodymium magnets

You can unmount the oem magnets and get the tiny round neodymium magnets from Amazon

These are 5mm in diameter and should glue to the bottom of the poles with super glue
remember to flip the middle ones

You can replace the enire poles with magnets as well

Interesting idea, though if a pickup sounds like crap with a ceramic bar, how would multiple neodymium poles improve it?

The pups in those really sound like crap. But the guitar is pretty decent. With a little bit of work and some new pups you could have a very fun knock-around guitar.

Throw a set of Duncan Designed SC 101's in it.
Or Tonerider Pure Vintage
Or GFS Vintage Grey Bottoms
All of these will give you fairly decent vintage Strat spank at budget prices.
If this doesn't work for you ,sell the axe,sell the pickups and have your horses teeth checked by a good vet! :fingersx:

Are you going for heavy tones or vintage Strat? For high gain applications, those cheapie pickups aren’t awful.

Wilkinson has a classic Alnico V set that sounds really good. There's also an Alnico V set from Fleor that are very cheap but surprisingly good sounding. I have a spare set of the Fleor pickups and two of the Alnico III single coils from the 50's series Squier Strat that are supposedly the same as the Tonerider Surfari's. Both the resistance and inductance are a match.

Fender Tex Mex is really cool and usually available very cheap. Texas Specials can be had for a steal, too.

I have a DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Blues that's been in the middle and bridge of one of my Strats. Killer pickup, and totally noiseless.

I've got a squire strat se that's kind of a cool beater. But of course I'm going to have to put more money into than it was ever worth.

For killer vintage single coil tone, the SSL-1 set is a sure bet. Adding an SSL-5 in the bridge really makes it versatile and balanced.

No experience with the Wilkinsons or GFS, so can't comment on those
