NGD - Les Paul Signature T

So after playing guitar for over 20 years I was finally able to purchase my first USA made Gibson Les Paul. I've wanted one since my early teens and even though I've had some great epiphones and copies from other manufacturers, i was never in a position to buy the real deal. I recently started a great new job after previously being at a very stressful company, and my wife pretty much told me to get out there today and buy myself a new guitar as her way of saying well done. At first i was thinking of the rather excellent Japanese Les Pauls like Tokai and Edwards, but after shipping these would get close to the price of a real Gibson, so I went around my local guitar stores to see if any deals on a Gibson were to be had. I found myself in my local Sam Ash and they had some great prices on Gibsons and I was able to try out out a series of Traditionals, Classics, Studios and this Signature T from 2013 that was still new.

I finally ended up going back and forth between the T and a second hand Gold Top Classic. I really liked how the Gold Top played and the tone was very Allman Bros, but the Signature T had a bit more texture to the tone, a bit more bite in the bridge and an amazingly vocal clapton style woman tone on the neck pickup. It also has coil taps that i need to experiment with a bit more. I really liked how i could try several guitars at the store until i found the right one for me. I was able to get a fairly good deal too at only $1499, so only a bit more than a studio and much less than a standard or traditional. Not a bargain price but not bad for a Gibson. Also as it's a 2013 it doesn't come with that automated tuning device or any commemorative inlays or special Fonts on the headstock, which i don't like as i'm pretty traditional. It weighs in at a nice 9 lbs, not too light but not a back breaker either. I have to say i really like how the 57 classic and classic plus pickups sound. I didn't know what was in there at the store and looked it up online when i got home. At least i could say that i bought the guitar with my ears rather than based on it's specifications. So far very impressed, and really looking forward to trying it out with my JTM 45 cranked at a jam. Took a couple of shots, the second one hopefully shows a bit of the flame that seems to depend on the light angle.

Re: NGD - Les Paul Signature T

Dang. Like other gentlemen of a certain age, I was expecting this to be about the elusive, asymmetric, semi-hollow, low-impedance model of the Norlin era.

Re: NGD - Les Paul Signature T

Nice man, congrats on buying a beautiful guitar. I love that finish on a Les Paul!

Re: NGD - Les Paul Signature T

Congratulations!

I just hit the same milestone. Been playing 20 years, finally got one of the guitars I've been listing after for forever.

Feels pretty good, doesn't it? :)

Thanks guys. I didn't realize the Signature name was from a previous design. Nice article link below on the original hollow body version:

The T stands for Tribute I think, as they only made them in 2013 when Gibson was running 'the year of Les Paul'. I think they've had a commemorative year for something the last few years (2014 was a Gibson anniversary and 2015 is a Les Paul anniversary I think). Luckily the 2013 celebrations resulted in a nice traditional Les Paul with an easily swapped T truss rod cover and no other special inlays or designs.
Still very much in a honeymoon period today and having fun running through all my favorite Page, Clapton, Kossoff, Gary Moore, Billy Gibbons and Allman Brothers licks.

Re: NGD - Les Paul Signature T

I wanted one of those pretty bad when they came out.

Nice score, man. She's a beaut!

Cool!
Agreed on the TR cover, too & lack of other crap that (to me) would take away from the "classic" looks.Must be more of a "traditionalist" than I'd thought.:)
Well Played!!!
I'd go for some Cream Bobbon Toppers,tho,myself,probably...

FWIW,my '74 LPCustom is a 20th Anniversary model...

Re: NGD - Les Paul Signature T

I have eleven Lesters but HOLY CRAP that is NICE! Totally G.A.S. inducing. Love the color and the subtle, vintage style flame.

Congrats on a VERY nice score!

Congrats and great story! Always nice when someone gets their dream guitar!

Re: NGD - Les Paul Signature T

Looks great. One thing I know about Les Pauls, since I've owned a bunch, is that 9 lbs. is a good balance of airiness and boldness, because it's neither too light nor too heavy. I'm also more of a fan of the square speed knobs like you have, over the top hat type. They're easier to grab onto.

If it were mine, the only thing I'd do is find a blank black truss rod cover....the Custom Shop one.

57 Classics and Burstbucker 1/2's are the only Gibson pickups I'll leave in a guitar, since they're good enough to to not upgrade. But if you do, there's plenty of Duncan choices like the Brobucker, WLH, C/59 Hybrid, Seth Lovers, PG's etc.

Did you check the electronics? I'm assuming it's a circuit board with clips, rather than soldered points. You can always create a way to change pickups with that layout. It's just a bit trickier.

Re: NGD - Les Paul Signature T

I love NLPDs! Nice score!

Incidentally, I am also owner of one of the aforementioned Signature semihollow models from the Norlin years. Great guitar but there's nothing 'Les Paul' about it besides the name! Well, and the weirdo electronics.

Happy to report no circuitboard. Just some Gibson pots and some neat soldering. I have WLHs and Pearly gates in my GTX and Epiphone Les Pauls and really like them, but the Classic 57 pickups will be staying in the Gibson, they really sound great, after playing the guitar for almost a week there isn't anything i'd change about the tone.

Also this may sound weird but the guitar has a great smell. The kind of aged woody smell you get from a well crafted acoustic or classical guitar. In my book the wood definitely makes a difference. Maybe i will change the truss rod to a blank one next string change, or maybe i'll leave it on for a while. After all the T was intended as a tribute to Les Paul, and i think Gibson did a great job with this guitar.

Re: NGD - Les Paul Signature T

Beautiful guitar! I used to have a '75 Les Paul Standard that looked very similar.
