NGD let down

Re: NGD let down

Sweetwater failed to setup my PRS SE Mark Holcomb properly so I just did the setup myself. The Seymour Duncan alpha and omega pickups are so killer and the thing plays beautifully now that I've got it where I want it. The guitar literally "sings".

Re: NGD let down

I hate to be the prick here but... this is exactly why we always say 'play before you pay'.

Good news is your dealing with sweetwater, I've had great customer experience from them so you should be taken care of.

Finding a well-made USA Gibson these days is like finding a needle in a haystack, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the fretwork.

30/10. Can't tell you how many Gibson's we used to send back when they came in

Re: NGD let down

Pretty amazing really. Anything and everything seems to leave the Gibson factory and out for resale and none as a B-stock, blem or factory second (not that I have seen anyway) and all with a passed QC sheet. Makes you wonder. Do the big dealers just keep selling a fubar Gibson that gets returned until somebody keeps it? I wonder if anything, other than actually broken or otherwise significantly screwed up, actually makes it back to Gibson for repair or "recycle"?

Re: NGD let down

Depends on the dealers QC to be honest. When we would send them back, if it was fixable it would be repaired, instead of a replacement.

Does that picture need to be rotated counter clock wise, or is it hanging on the wall like that?

If it's hanging on the wall like that....... :yourock:

It's a string swing hanger. I didn't have anywhere to put a stand so I figured why not try one out.

Re: NGD let down

Hopefully the new one you get will be better.

Not all Gibsons are lemons, folks. It could have been an abused floor model. Who knows? Is it in fact US made?

Re: NGD let down

It's US made the problem is at the factory where the cut the neck. It actually goes in a slight bowl shape. So the did the fretboard to match. And did the frets to match the radius. So as you go between the 16th and 19th fret the frets gradually get closer to the high E string an a arch. Where they chopped the ends of the frets off. Then after the 19th fret it's fills back out. My wife even noticed it as soon as she looked at it. It should not have left Gibson or sweetwater. But at least they are letting me return it.
Now the issue is if I can find something else to get in its place. They are sold out of tons of stuff and have no idea when anything is coming in. All their prs lines went from the 13th of this month to the end of the month. Now they are telling me stuff has been pushed back to mid April on most brands.

Re: NGD let down

Henry J (owner of Gibson) is a complete A-Hole! He is the anti-guitar hero of all time. I own two Gibsons that I had to do fret dressing on. Talk about quality control?

I really like LP's. Several have come and gone. I don't want to turn this into a bash Gibson thread. The ones that are built right are good guitars. And I do believe that the majority are still well built. But what you mention about QC is exactly the problem. If 80% of what leaves the factory are built well, that still leaves a hell of a lot of guitars that have problems. And potential buyers are going to see them. There cant be any real QC going on when an "inspector" is going to check all the boxes and put his initials on the QC card that ships with those "bad" guitars. Even if it's 20%, hell, even if it's 10%, that's too many to accidentally slip through. I really believe that they pass QC and ship just about everything they build and let the dealers and end users sort it out. And if that's the case, that does suck. They can only get away with it because of the Gibson brand name.

Re: NGD let down

What the hell? Sweetwater os supposed to have a good inspection process. My pm2 from them is riddled with buzzes. Makes you wonder what the hell they're doing.

Re: NGD let down

I don't know this to be true, but I'm just wondering out loud here. Is it possible that between the lower quality materials used on the less expensive (I still wouldn't call them 'cheap') ones, and something about those faded finishes that lets humidity in and out of the guitar more rapidly that's causing a lot of their problems?

I remember seeing a new LPM at a GC where the fretboard had separated from the neck between the nut and the first fret to the point where you could actually look at it from the side and see daylight on the other side!

All GC did was mark it down.

Re: NGD let down

No, it's not the finish that's causing the problem. There are plenty of unfinished necks out there that do not have these problems and most fretboards aren't finished anyway. This a Gibson quality control problem. They are NOT what they used to be and, these days, their import lines are exhibiting far greater consistency than anything sub-$2K coming out of the USA. Sad fact, but 100% true.

Re: NGD let down

Well sweetwater issued my refund now I just have to wait for it to clear. The stupid part is they know what's wrong with it and it's back up on their site for sale.

Sad. But I guess it answers my question above. Apparently they'll just keep selling it until someone keeps it.
