NGD let down

Re: NGD let down

That's lame. Puts me off Sweetwater for sure.

Re: NGD let down

No, it's not the finish that's causing the problem. There are plenty of unfinished necks out there that do not have these problems and most fretboards aren't finished anyway. This a Gibson quality control problem. They are NOT what they used to be and, these days, their import lines are exhibiting far greater consistency than anything sub-$2K coming out of the USA. Sad fact, but 100% true.

+1
Anyone else hear about their shake up? Supposedly they are closing the Custom Shop, but have refinanced to keep the Gibson USA door open for a while, however some of the guys that know what they're doing are getting the axe or being forced to retire.

Re: NGD let down

Well sweetwater issued my refund now I just have to wait for it to clear. The stupid part is they know what's wrong with it and it's back up on their site for sale.

This thread makes me feel like a pessimist, but Sweetwater is very much like Gibson...great back in the day, but they are too big now for their own good. They are just another Musician's Friend, etc. now. That's not a bad thing, but I no longer go out of my way to buy from Sweetwater because the only thing "extra" you get by ordering from them are a few free picks with your packing slip.

Re: NGD let down

my first Gibson was a faded and I truly hated it. I didnt have this kind of an issue with it but it wasnt the greatest considering it was a "gibson". The Prs se line in my opinion is much better built for the price range. Hell these days even epiphone make better instruments. Thats just my 2 cents.

Re: NGD let down

Sweetwater should have caught it as well, being they are kind of self-billed as the quality/service-based online outlet.
(Aren't they all though?! lol)

Makes ya wonder how it got passed the 55 point inspection doesn't it.

Re: NGD let down

Not really. Incompetence is widespread in a world that rewards mediocrity while punishing excellence.

Agreed.. Ive read all over the net about how great the service is, and been impressed with my dealings with them for small stuff that I considered getting my next axe there. second guessing that decision now..

Re: NGD let down

Yeah, but at least they let you send stuff back without a hassle. Pretty important for high dollar, sight unseen purchases. Just may be smart to stay away from customer return guitars ... Gibson's anyway.

Re: NGD let down

I've never had a problem with Sweetwater's returns, but I've never returned anything because of bad workmanship and then saw it back up on the site for sale. They either know better than to send it back to Gibson for some reason, or someone there is figuring that it was just 'personal preference' why you didn't like it. Either way, I am sure it will eventually end up back in their hands.

Re: NGD let down

I just don't like the fact that they restock an item with such obvious quality issues. It speaks to a lack of integrity.

Re: NGD let down

One man's trash is another man's treasure, and they are in business to make money as much as possible. Selling it twice is a better deal to them than returning only.

Re: NGD let down

To me, it would be like going to a restaurant, ordering a steak, then finding out that the one I got was one that was sent back by someone else because it had too much gristle. Sure, they as a company can do it, but a negative reputation costs more in the long run than the price of a few guitars.

Re: NGD let down

Henry J (owner of Gibson) is a complete A-Hole! He is the anti-guitar hero of all time. I own two Gibsons that I had to do fret dressing on. Talk about quality control?

;>)/

I was thinking of getting a Les Paul, but it seems like they aren't what they used to be. You have to spend big bucks if you don't want one with weight relief... I'm positive the modern weight relief is an excuse to use crappy wood and get away with it.

I'm still looking for a Les Paul, but I'm going to get a Heritage brand Les Paul. They seem to keep things simple and you know exactly what you are getting.

Gibson LP Studio Deluxe IV. Basically, a Traditional without the binding. Under $1200

Re: NGD let down

Just adding my 2 cents. I played a us gibson explorer at l&m priced at like $2200 it it played so bad. Worse than my squire strat. The hetfield explorer epiphone they had for 1k played so much better. Thinking about it now it was probably one of the worst guitars I've ever tried at a music store.
