NGD : P90s X3 = good times for all

Decided it was time to get back on the PRS horse. As some of you might remember, I had a PRS CE24 a few years back (in a beautiful blue), that I sold for a variety of reasons. I didn't get along with the 24 frets on the neck and the really think profile of the said neck. I wasn't crazy about the bolt on construction either. The pickups I dug, as well as the woods used. LOVED the maple neck, with the mahogany-maple body. LOVED the trem. I sold it for the right reasons, but I've been looking for an excuse to get back into the brand.

Well, I found my excuse. There are a lot of cool PRS on the used market, and it was just a question of finding the right one. So, I saw this guitar and decided to give it a whirl. It's a 2002 PRS Custom 22 Soapbar. Mahogany body, maple top, and set maple neck (1 problem solved). It has 22 frets, and a nice medium neck profile I can really work with (2 more issued solved).

Now the elephant in the room : the pickup configuration. I've been wanting to get into soapbars for a while, as I'm fully aware of what they are capable of doing. This was a great opportunity to add them to my collection, and I figured I might as well go for 3. LOVE the tone. They are Duncans, and I'm really happy with them. The 5 way switch acts like a strat, with a master tone and volume control, so there are lots of cool sounds to be had.

She's a player, so she had a few dents and scratches, but the finish on the neck feels great, and she's super resonant. I've often been critical of PRS guitar saying they lack a certain character or mojo... and I gotta say, this one has a vibe. I don't know if it's the pickups, the unusual look, or the dents and wear, but she just feels like she's begging to be played. Without further delay, here she is, in all her glory.

Re: NGD : P90s X3 = good times for all

Thanks guys! I'm really pleased with this addition to my lineup. I play a lot of clean work, which doesn't mean I don't like a little girth in my tone, and this delivers. I play with some dirt also, and when I do, I like my dirt old school and gritty. Again, this delivers.

Empty Pockets ; truth be told, I'm not a PRS guy either. Owned one, sold it, was telling my bass player the other day at the music store I'd never get back on that boat. But.... this guitar really doesn't feel like the other PRS I've played. The guy had is sitting for sale for a little bit, because it's not immaculate. PRS people usually want the super clean guitar with the most glimmering finish in the universe. This one has a dirty burst, and the neck finish is naturally yellowing, and has naturally become satin.

And that, is just alright with me. :) She will be joining my LP with a bigsby on stage as my 2 guitars for the next gig.

I will! Plugging in tonight with the Excelsior (big 15inch speaker should be fun with the soapbars). I'm looking forward to seeing how that works out.

Congrats. Three P-90's set up like a strat is a good idea. I think PRS discontinued that model as well, so yours will continue to get rarer to come by.

HOLY CRAP...I love that color! That is a BEAUTIFUL guitar right there!

Got back from jam, and I have to say, this guitar did not disappoint. It has a very, very similar feel to what my CE24 had, but with more attitude and vibe that suits me overall.

My bassist is usually the one who will give me a hard time when I get a new guitar (he's the type that has 1 great instrument, and plays the **** out of it), and even he said it really fit well in the mix. He stated that it was like a grown up version of my last PRS : where the other one was flashier and more technical, this one was more mature and has more complexity to it.
