Decided it was time to get back on the PRS horse. As some of you might remember, I had a PRS CE24 a few years back (in a beautiful blue), that I sold for a variety of reasons. I didn't get along with the 24 frets on the neck and the really think profile of the said neck. I wasn't crazy about the bolt on construction either. The pickups I dug, as well as the woods used. LOVED the maple neck, with the mahogany-maple body. LOVED the trem. I sold it for the right reasons, but I've been looking for an excuse to get back into the brand.
Well, I found my excuse. There are a lot of cool PRS on the used market, and it was just a question of finding the right one. So, I saw this guitar and decided to give it a whirl. It's a 2002 PRS Custom 22 Soapbar. Mahogany body, maple top, and set maple neck (1 problem solved). It has 22 frets, and a nice medium neck profile I can really work with (2 more issued solved).
Now the elephant in the room : the pickup configuration. I've been wanting to get into soapbars for a while, as I'm fully aware of what they are capable of doing. This was a great opportunity to add them to my collection, and I figured I might as well go for 3. LOVE the tone. They are Duncans, and I'm really happy with them. The 5 way switch acts like a strat, with a master tone and volume control, so there are lots of cool sounds to be had.
She's a player, so she had a few dents and scratches, but the finish on the neck feels great, and she's super resonant. I've often been critical of PRS guitar saying they lack a certain character or mojo... and I gotta say, this one has a vibe. I don't know if it's the pickups, the unusual look, or the dents and wear, but she just feels like she's begging to be played. Without further delay, here she is, in all her glory.
