NGD! PRS Content

I've always admired PRS. Wanted one for so long. There’s something to be said about PRS’s.

After wanting a PRS for so long, I finally had the opportunity to make it happen. Working with a set budget, I had to find the right one. I started my quest looking at various SC245s. My main guitar is/was a Gibson Les Paul. I figured I’ve been an LP guy for as long as I can remember, maybe I should start my search there (transition to PRS would be smooth). I also prefer 22 frets. I mainly play rhythm, melodies, ambiance, secondary parts, etc. So I don’t even use those frets much.

I also looked at various S2 models. Neither spoke to me. There were always something missing. I know that do to my budget some compromises would have to be made, but I didn’t want to shortchange myself either. Those were all very nice axes, I just wanted more. So I looked at a few McCartys. Other guitarist in my band has one. I liked the feel, look, playability of it. It also has the craftsmanship/quality I desired, yet still being around budget.

Wanting a slightly different tone than the LP gave me, a slightly brighter/snappier tone than the McCarty and a trem system, while still having the craftsmanship of the Core line, I found a good deal on a mint conditioned 2007 CE 22. While I had to compromise on not having the birds or moons, I didn't have to compromise on some of the finer details (recessed controls and back panels, multiple piece neck, flat angle/no lip near binding, top, etc ala S2 offerings). It offered everything I wanted. I don’t mind the bolt on neck, I actually really like it.

I ordered a pair of Seymour Duncan Custom 5 (SH-15) / 59 (Sh-1n) that I can’t wait to drop in. I prefer Duncans over Gibson/Prs/Dimarzio pups. That combo and that axe will sound beautiful with my amp (Mesa Boogie Stiletto Ace).

Anyone know what color this is? Place called it Ocean Turquoise (not sure if that’s correct or not).

thats a perfect combo for that axe. looks beautiful!

I'm excited to try that combo out. The bridge that came with is decent. The neck leaves alot to be desired (hoping the 59 solves that). How would you compare the C5 to say a Screamin Demon?

Re: NGD! PRS Content

Congratulations on your newly acquired guitar! It sure is a nice looking guitar!
The 59/Custom 5 combo is a good pick if you ask me. Keep us informed how you like it when you got the pickups installed!

Re: NGD! PRS Content

Congratulations! The CE bolt on is nothing like regular bolt ons! It's basically a set neck design that's bolted on instead of glued in. Really goes to show their great sense of design.

Re: NGD! PRS Content

Love it. The blue flame finish, the awesome Maple binding, the trem..plus the Core line that guitars is something I would love to have!

The finish is a concern, it's not Nitro, but probably the PRS proprietary "V2" finish, which is a water thin Polyurethane I believe ....but I think Warmoth uses a similar gloss finish, and I have a couple of Warmoths with that type finish that sound plain glorious

From PRS;

"In our history, most of our instruments have been finished with a polyester basecoat and acrylic urethane topcoat. We feel acrylic urethane looks and feels the close to the old nitrocellulose finishes but avoided the issue of future finish checking. Several PRS models, including our Sunburst, Satin, Modern Eagles, and DGT models use a nitrocellulose finish in order to provide the classic feel and tone of vintage instruments.

In 2010, PRS Guitars introduced its new V12 finish. This finish was developed over 12 years, and it is intended as a midpoint between nitro and acrylic with a classic feel all its own. V12 is extremely thin to allow the guitar to resonate, but it is still incredibly durable with no risk of reacting to leather or guitar stands in a negative way"

ME ( NOT PRS)
Does wood "breathe"? HELL YES wood breathes..i got akick out of that pseudo 'expert' "luthier"who came on here proclaiming in an unequiviocal way that wood does not breathe and so on , so forth...but how many vintage Starts does that yahoo own?..none!...yeah, none or less than none.

Part of the reason why old Strats sound great ( of course they were made by master luthiers with the premium grade old growth wood no longer available) is the wood has sort of petrified through the old Nitro finish after 50 years,,and yes, we all pretty much know there is a Poly substrate on all lacquer finishes, even the old Fender..

The great news is you can now get baked bodies and necks. Nature really deosn't care how wood petrifies..of course there is no substitute for old growth wood, baked or otherwise, nor a hand carved/fitted an assembled master luthier instrument.

Beautiful- aside from the 22 fret neck heel, if you don't mind it, it's a far superior instrument to the current CE's

Re: NGD! PRS Content

That's friggin' gorgeous! I love it.

Honestly, if I was going with a PRS at this point, I'd be all over the bolt-on CE series. Every one I've played has bowled me over with feel, playability and tone.

Outstanding!

Love the color. Like faded denim.

Are you going to retain the 5 position rotary switch?

If so, you'll have to flip the magnet in one pickup.

PRS flips the magnet of the bridge pickup.

Also, PRS uses a different color code for the wires.

You ordered the 59n with 4 conductor cable...right?

i did not, but I'm going switch out the rotary dial for a 3 way switch. i have split coils push pull on my lp i never use. i only use mainly bridge or neck pickups.

the reg 59 should work with that right?

Yep. It'll work fine.

I did the same thing to my Custom 22 guitars.

In fact, I have a set of newish 59's in one of mine.

Seth Lovers in the other.

You'll have to enlarge the hole slightly to go to a 3 way.

Re: NGD! PRS Content

Very nice!

I played an old CE24 (cherry burst) once, from 1989, great guitar; nicely worn in neck. The only thing I disliked was the rotary pu selector, but a minor thing in the overall scheme of things. Still think about it sometimes..

Re: NGD! PRS Content

Very pretty! My advice is, try the rotary for a little while with the new pickups- you get used to it pretty quickly. At least I did.
