NGD! PRS Content

Re: NGD! PRS Content

Very pretty! My advice is, try the rotary for a little while with the new pickups- you get used to it pretty quickly. At least I did.

Therr's already some cool tones in there with the current pups, i imagine new pups would have more. Unfortunately, 5 way is not practical for my uses. I mainly only used 2 positions on my LP (neck or bridge only). I dont even use push pull either. I switch between pups often, sometimes multiple times during a song which makes it harder to use the 5 way rotary.

Re: NGD! PRS Content

taking the axe to my tech today to have pups installed, setup and 3 way toggle installes to replace the 5 way rotary.

Im super eager to also find the modcat number under the pups. Ill be ablr to find out exactly whats my axe all about.

Regarding the five way rotary....

I was never able to get used to it onstage. I had to look at it to set it to the right setting and I don't like to think to much onstage about anything other than the music.

I rarely wanted to hear the single coil sounds on my PRS - they're just no where near as good as a Strat's sound so for that sound I want to use my Strat. Not my PRS.

So going with a three way instantly felt more comfortable and I'm glad I did it, even though I probably devalued my PRS by doing so.

I hear ya on that. Its bad enough to tap dance pedals on stage, let alone having to turn a knob. The knob threw me off as well, all turning towards neck is actually bridge and vice versa. im so used to up/down which literally takes half a second.

Re: NGD! PRS Content

I've owned several PRSi over the years. Definitely a 3way switch guy over the roto5. Lew's tip on the mag will save some frustration! LOL.

Beautiful guitar man.

My tech just shot me over a picture of the sticker inside the pickup cavity of the guitar.

Here's some intel on the guitar.....

Classic Electric, 22 frets, Pattern Wide/Fat Neck Carve, Figure Maple, Non Ten Top, Maple Neck and Body with Indian Rosewood Fingerboard, Blue Matteo finish, Dragon 2 pickups (Bridge was replaced with some sort of Dimarzio. Doesn't really matter as I'm swapping the pickups anyways).

Why do people hate the PRS rotary control so much? I've never used one, so I am in the dark about it...but many people absolutely hate it.

It's not really practical in a live setting. It may work if all you're doing is soloing the whole song or if you only plan on using one setting. I do a lot of rhythm work and secondary work. I'll switch between neck, bridge, both, push/pull, etc. It's easier to flip the toggle switch (and/or push/pull) on a down stroke to change settings and be back for the up stroke without missing a beat.

The rotatory dial "clicks" into positions. So unlike say your volume or tone knob that can be turned fast, this thing would require 5 clicks to go from neck to bridge or vice versa. That's a difference of say 1/2 to a whole measure vs a beat. This becomes a problem when your heading into the last measure of the verse and switching to bridge pickup for chorus on the last beat of the measure.

It can be done on rotatory, it just needs planned for well in advance.

Re: NGD! PRS Content

Congrats! Smart people know that 22 frets = The Boss for neck pickup leads! :D

I had a Custom 22 with flamed amber top and cream pickups that was almost too beautiful (and valuable) to play. I had to sell it during the Great Recession of 2009. :( But I will have another one day....

That's messed up. I know that PRS (the guy) is a great player, and has done many live shows, but maybe when he started putting these on guitars, there were not many switch options. He may keep doing it because it is part of PRS's heritage, I don't know. It seems terribly clumsy. Schaller makes a MegaSwitch that replicates all 5 positions on a blade-type switch.

I may have been exaggerating a bit on timing, but it definitely takes longer to switch pups due to the nature of a dial. A 5 way blade or 3 way toggle is quicker. I think the reason may have been there's more tones available that way than say a traditional 5 way blade. There's also a way to make it a 6 way as well. Who knows? Some people really like it. It takes some time getting used to it, I just prefer a 3 way for my playing.

Re: NGD! PRS Content

I much prefer the 3way but if you spend time with the rotary you get good with it. A guy I played with had a prs and he flipped that rotary as fast as the rest of us flick a switch
