I went to my local GC last week. They had all their PRS and EBMM guitars with Clearance tags on them. Prices marked down $100's, as in the last week of November last year, when I bought a 305 for $1000 below their usual price.
Last November, this 25th Anniversary McCarty Narrow Field caught my eye. I'd watched a demo video of the Swamp Ash Special with Narrow Field pickups and thought it would be a cool Strat-style guitar with some unique twists. The local GC didn't have a Swamp Ash Special, but I took home this McCarty.
The Narrow Field pickups pretty much do what PRS claims. I had a little guitar shootout in my living room over the weekend. The McCarty doesn't sound quite as full or have as much output as my Hamer Monaco Elite Mahogany with Duncan '59's. But the McCarty is louder and fatter sounding than Strat-style guitars including my 305, or my Godin Progression.
Might be a great instrument for single coil sounds with some extra beef and crunch. The neck Narrow Field pickup is like a single coil, but thicker and bluesy sounding. I can see this guitar being very handy for the classic prog rock and blues that I record.
