NGD: Red, Sparkly & pretty different..

Phantasmagoria

watch where you point that sabre
My new (used/like new) RG550XH (Indo built) I've been gassing for one for years since they were first introduced Somehow never got around to buying one (lack of availabiliy/lack of funds :laugh2:)

Pretty lucky to have got one used locally for a great price/ in like-new condition considering they are discontinued and have shot up in price used on places like Reverb/eBay ($1000+).

What makes it different is the fact that it has 30 frets (which I can see being a bit of fun, when I get the hang of it) & also that it has active circuit that "simulates' a neck pickup (when it does'nt actually have one) incl. in-between positions/5 way switching. Got to say it works great and I can't tell the difference from a real neck pup..

Playability is 'through the roof' awesome. This guitar is a shredder's dream with sublime fuckin' tones!

Low action. no hint of fret buzz at all, anywhere , solid flawless build quality, shredalicious neck are the other positives. The only negative being it is hard as hell to play up to the 30th fret! But hopefully I'll get there. The skinny lower horn may be a bit of a deterrent for some too..but not for me. Upper fret access up to the 24th fret especially is incredible :bigthumb: And the aesthetics are just fine with me. It has a great 'red sparkle' paint job, Edge zero II locking tremolo bridge (keeps insanely tight tune), Infinity pup's that sound really great. All in all a killer guitar that I could'nt be happier with :bigthumb:

Clips to come as always..maybe on the weekend after I get to spend a little more time with this baby!

Yeah definitely an oddity :lmao:

Here's Chapman's demo from when they first introduced them.

30 frets and all that apart..it's just a great playing & sounding guitar & reaching the 24th fret has never been easier :bigthumb: Above that it tends to approach dog whistle pitch, but that probably has some uses that I have yet to discover :laugh2:

Haha, nice one. Certainly remember when they came out, they got a lot of attention. Get yer Uli on!

I think those extra frets would also be useful for tapped melodic stuff, à la Satch's 'Midnight'.

A friend of mine had tried to sell one like that for years with no success. Apparently the radical look and questionable usefulness of extra frets scared people away. The pointy lower horn looks pretty fragile too.

Anyone needs effortless upper fret access should get a Washburn Parallaxe with Stephen's extended cutaway.

Or just get this one :D

It's a solid axe..nothing fragile about it. It sounds great & plays great even without going stratospheric. But if f you want that something extra ..it's there :bigthumb:

The guy I bought it from (on the day he posted it up for sale) had already turned down 3 offers earlier that day. I consider myself lucky, especially after getting my hands on it :D

Actually I've heard a number of guys getting 24+ frets only for gaining better access for the regular 24...

Either way, it's not sg I would want, but it's a really nice looking guitar, congrats! Also, that neck pup modelling circuitry sounds intriguing, never heard of it!

that makes a lot of sense to me. totally un-encumbered access to the high frets even if you dont use the last few

Looks like a cool guitar. How hard is it to fret up 25 - 30? My fat fingers start to have troubles around 21-22 on most necks.

It been great fun I have to say. The awesome thing about it is that gives you really great access upto the 24 fret as nexion mentioned in his post below . After that it's pretty tough/but mostly unfamiliar/disorienting to actually play any kind of scale runs...or even tap (unless your tapping with your pick)..maybe with practice? but is pretty cool for bending individual notes, sliding, pinch harmonics etc. The 30th fret (wood in between) is about the width of a knitting needle....so not exactly a breeze to play up there. :laugh2:

Jammed this over a eastern sounding YT backing track. It's all the bridge pup. I meant to switch to the middle/neck but I forgot :p

I did go right up the neck as much as I could, but if you do that too often it sounds like your playing a Kazoo :laugh2:

Apart from that the strings are badly in need of changing ..super cruddy. Think I'll do that later today..

^^ That's my personal Randall T2 "tone Capture" patch that I made for my Mooer Ge300 modeler going straight into Reaper.

Sure. ..I just have a cheap crappy Redmi phone with a lousy camera though.. You'd probably be better off just googling the model.

I'll take some & post them up in a while anyway..

Meanwhile here's clip # 2: Jamming a slow solo over a backing track ..neck pup first, then midde for a bit & bridge last. Still using the cruddy old strings..

Sadly I mess up a lot when I go above the 24th fret (which I'm doing way more than is necessary :laugh2:) ...just to illustrate that it's tough playing stuff up there.... 'cause of the narrow frets (there's no fret buzz whatsoever..but unless your fingers fret correctly, notes get stiffled..& the grubby/rusty strings are'nt helping either) ...but maybe with some practice

Bridge solo ends on fret #30 high E string..
