NGD: RG Premium

A week ago I ordered a 2nd condition RG920QM from Musician's Friend. It actually arrived yesterday, but I wasn't able to enjoy it until today. It's in my favorite color: blue, and hell I could never tell that it was a secondhand. If I go to the nearest Ibby dealer and try their 920, I'm sure it'll be exactly the same, only in red or grey.

I apologize for the low quality pictures. I took them with my Nokia.

The finish is gorgeous, IMO, as can be seen here.

It came with a gig bag, as seen here. (I already have a hard case in which resided another guitar).

The pickups could be better, as they lacked the vocal quality the PAF 36th Anniversary model my other guitar has. I'll replace them later this year.

The guitar came tuned to e-flat with 9s. Low action. Took me a little while to switch to E standard 10s with high action that I'm accustomed to.

The tremolo is very nice, and the thumbwheel spring adjustment knob that comes with it is very helpful, albeit lacking in customization options. (I pimped the hell out of my other guitar, which is something I couldn't and wouldn't do with this one)
The ZPS, I have mixed feelings. Just about everything with the trem becomes a chore, be it balancing or diving or pulling up. Double stops are easier, however, and bending feels similar to bending on a stoptail.

Another cool thing I love about this guitar is the neck. It's a bit too thin than I'd like, but the profile is great. It really facilitates the two thumb placements I love: thumb over the neck (while the palm floating in the air), and thumb behind the neck.

Overall, I'm quite happy to get this guitar for a price much lower than an American Standard Strat.

Re: NGD: RG Premium

congrats!!! I was really tempted by these when they came out. Nice looking axes and nice features. cool you got a great deal on yours!

Re: NGD: RG Premium

Wow, 3mm at the 12th fret! I have 1.5mm in my RG721, and I didn't go any lower than that (which I'd like to) just because I hate fret buzz.

You must have the HIGHEST ACTION RG EVAH! That's a manly RG.

Re: NGD: RG Premium

Thanks, guys. I'm really happy with it. Just when I laid eyes on it online, I knew I had to have it :D

Re: NGD: RG Premium

Enjoy! I've actually started using the gigbag (same one) that came with my 10th Anniversary Prestige pretty much as my daily guitar carry bag. I like it a lot.

Re: NGD: RG Premium

Congrats! By the way, as far as I know a Premium Ibby comes stock with a semi hard-shell case in rectangular shape, not a gig bag. How come you didn't get that one?

The pickups are genuine Dimarzios, similar to Steve Morse model if I remember it correctly.

Re: NGD: RG Premium

I want a premium.

The premium and the regular ones (not Gio) are made in the same factory in Indonesia, but it's like twice or thrice the price of a regular Ibanez. I think the major difference is the titanium truss rod, don't know if it really makes a big difference.

Re: NGD: RG Premium

Brian i think it is "titanium rods" (in plural) rather than titanium truss rod. I think the two titanium rods just enhances the strength of the thin neck.
BTW, Archer , indeed man, your action is wayyy too high.

The voicing is kinda like a PAF Pro, though. VERY clear.

Re: NGD: RG Premium

Props for playing with high action ;). On my #1, it's about 2mm at the 12th; it is a bit more of an effort to play but you get used to it. Then when you play guitars with lower action it feels like cheating :D.

Nice axe though; the Premiums seem to be getting a good rep. I'd like to try a Premium JS and AT myself.

With my lousy playing, I need all the help I can get! :laugh2:

My Premium RG (721) is a great guitar, too. Nice wood, nice hardware (except for the OEM switch), great playability.

I think the Premiums are better than people give them credit for. And IMO, 2mm at the 12th fret is probably the most versatile action ever: anyone can pick it up and play.

PS: I'm sure you'll like the AT Premium. The tone and quality is really great. I, myself, wouldn't mind giving the Kiko 100P a try, though. :9:
