NGD: Squier Blowing Away Expectations

Went to guitar center and saw this squier j mascis jazzmaster that I thought just looked cool. Played a bit on a whim and was surprised that the sound and feel was so good. Completely blowing away what I expected from a squier. Guitar center had it at a nice discount too so got it for around $100 less. Gonna see what I think about it at home but it goes well with my SG
Will post pics when I get the chance

The Mascis Squier has an amazing neck and build quality; I have a non-Mascis Squier VM Jazzmaster, they're great guitars. The only thing I'll caution on is the vibrato; I've had a few Squier vibratos that are faulty and not stable; replacing with an American Jazzmaster vibrato is an upgrade overall.

Yup. the Mascis Squier is incredible.

I sold a few back when I worked at the store. At one time we had that an an American Jazzmaster in stock, and honestly (The MIA was great) but I would have taken the Squier and upgraded it myself, and still been way under the MIA Price.

good score.

I’ve always been interested in that guitar, seems like a cool and affordable entry point into the offset world. Was it just the general Guitar Center coupon they are always running with a manager approval?

It was some guitar a thon thing a lot of their guitars were off maybe trying to clear things that weren't selling but this was spoke to me really digging the sound from these not really jazzmaster p90s

Re: NGD: Squier Blowing Away Expectations

I'm a big Mascis fan. For a long time there was an MIJ Fender (rather than Squier) Mascis signature hanging in a Best Buy music center (remember when?) They eventually wanted a paltry sum for it... The thing is, certain things bug me about Fender Japan Jazzmasters that I actually preferred to mod a Squier.

...Of course now purple sparkle Jazzmasters are somewhat rare and sell for a LOT more than what was being asked.

They're great guitars, maybe the best thing they do consistently

Re: NGD: Squier Blowing Away Expectations

I played the PJ bass recently (mentioned here) and I was utterly shocked by the quality. Is it generally accepted now that Squier are a pretty good brand if you're looking to save a bit of money? I remember them being panned quite a lot.

Re: NGD: Squier Blowing Away Expectations

Squier and EPI are building some VERY nice guitars these days. And IMO, any of the special Squiers (sig models, Vintage modern series, etc) seem to be a cut above

Re: NGD: Squier Blowing Away Expectations

Unfortunately I ended up returning it. Sounded great but when it came to playing it in practices the ergonomics of it like the switch placement kept hitting it when strumming, the weight. It just wasnt as comfortable to play. I had to think a bit more than I'd like to when just playing and jamming if that makes sense

But I did put the money towards another guitar that is far superior already to me in terms of tones, and playability. Which will come soon

Re: NGD: Squier Blowing Away Expectations

Hard for me to imagine picking high enough toward the neck on a Jazzmaster that I'd hit the switch; especially considering the large lower bout usually places my hand closer to the bridge on the natural than on other guitars. Still, ergonomics are important to me too (which is why I have to tough it out when I play Strats, go figure.)
