Those Gibson tuners are crap. I had an 02 that I bought brand new and within 3 months the back of the D tuner popped off. They sent a replacement, but still, it's a bad design.
That is correct! No fear for the Alnico II Pro's on full mahogany guitars either! They really sound great here! About the Gibson stock tuners... you say the truth. They really aren't a great deal at all! Even in new conditions, they have problems keeping up in tune. Construction is another bad thing. This past X-mas; I played a 2011 Gibson Les Paul Standard in a Guitar Center.. the guitar was a BIG FAILURE on tuning issues. More than 15 minutes trying to keep it in tune. I hated it! Big dissapointment I had on my 2nd time playing a Gibson Les Paul.
PS. You're right! I really need/want a new knob for the V. That ''all black knob'' just kills the look a little bit.
Don't think it needs a new thread, just curious on what you thought of it as opposed to the other way around is all.
As for hardware, I like the Faber stuff. pretty good quality for less than boutique prices and they have lightweight and aged stuff too. I have them on a couple guitars.

I like Faber, too, especially since Gibson stopped using Schaller stuff. If you just go and get a replacement Nashville, it's going to be a step down. I'm an ABR fan, anyway. Gotoh makes a pretty good Nashville type if that's what you want.
Which one could you recommend me? I had never heard of Faber before* I have heard the Gotoh, Schaller & TonePros names before. Don't know which one is better than the other; but I'm open to getting the best one possible.
I'm thinking Custom/PGn. I couldn't say why, it's just a feeling in my bones...

No prob man! I tried out the configuration in my DBZ Bolero. It definitely wasn't I was looking for in that guitar. The Pearly Gates didn't have any bass in it
Maybe in a full mahogany guitar like this one; it could do the trick. If another one appears; maybe I'll try the PGn again with a Custom/59 hybrid on the bridge. I will like to try that bridge, one day! THANKS!
Well for the overall price you ended up with an excellent deal even if you had to buy new pups and tuners. You can always sell the EMG actives or keep them for another guitar down the road.

Yeah! It was one hell of a deal indeed! I sold the EMG 85, right when the first tuner broke. The 81 went to a new home 2 months after. I won my Slash Alnico II Pro set in the Tone Hunt quest contest. I got to be one of the lucky winners and I'm very grateful the Seymour Duncan company send me the Slash Alnico II Pro's. Really happy about it!
The V is actually my favorite live guitar. I love my DBZ even a little bit more; but the V really amazes me. Is the one I'm using and will keep using live from now on. Thanks for your wishes!

Let's talk about the 85 bridge, 81 EMG neck configuration...
Many guitar players and forum members that have used EMG's are familiar with the EMG 81-85 aka Zakk Wylde's set.
While that set is very popular, people that have played it feels the 81 as a trebly, high gain pickup, piercing for leads. Is good sounding, but lacks bass. The 85 as a neck pickup is full sounding, very defined leads, clear, powerful. A great neck pickup!
Now... let's invert the 81 & 85: EMG 85 in the bridge & EMG 81 in the neck position. A WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD!
The EMG 85 really has BALLS! I have a Duncan Custom and the EMG 85 killed one of my favorite humbuckers of all time, my Duncan Custom. While I love and still like the Duncan Custom, the EMG 85 had a bigger, fuller sound on cleans. The playing really stood out in the mix.
When overdriven/distorted.... IT REALLY KICKED SOME BUTT!!!
I don't listen many metal artists or band, but I do really like hard & heavy (metal style) guitar sound; and the EMG 85 really ROCKED at it! It sure was heavy, REALLY HEAVY! I palm muted on it and the ''chug'' felt crushing. Really HEAVY!
The EMG 81 on the neck position... a very inspiring neck pickup. Very clear, full sounding when clean. I really felt that great metal, 80's arena rock cleans when played. I played some strums, arpeggios, played rhythm guitar with it. Everything was PERFECT!
When overdriven... it balanced, complimented and keep itself perfectly with the 85 in the bridge position. It didn't lack or felt overpowered at all! It really surprised me!
They're both, very good, very balanced in the middle position.
If you ask me which I prefer...
EMG 81 Bridge/ EMG 85 Neck or

I really was satisfied with this configuration. Don't feel any fear at trying this humbucker setup. It is very balanced, powerful, doesn't lack in any way, and I have to admit.... I want a guitar with that configuration in the future.
Is not that the traditional 81/85 config is bad.... is just that the 85/81 is a lot better. Playing feel is more organic, real, powerful, balanced, doesn't lack in any deparment. Metal guitar players that really like it...HEAVY, will love this setup! Rock musicians don't fear! It's a great versatile configuration.
It takes all kind of effects nicely. You can play with confidence that the tone will be there for you alright!
I really didn't find a fault for it! I can't say a bad thing about it!
About suiting it to certain music styles.... use it for clean work or on aplications where a good amount of gain is appreciated.
For ''slight'' overdriven work, I can't say a lot of it.
You will have to be careful and rely on some sort of stompbox with light gain for it. But HEY! Nothing's written on stone! Someone could make the difference!
I would use the 85/81 configuration for all types of music; except for the following: classic rock n' roll, very mellow rock or where a ''sweet n' soft'' sound is required. The 85/81 is made to stand out in the crowd, cuts thru anything with authority and your playing will get noticed. Definitely a highly recommended setup.
