NGD! Warmoth, baby!

Finished stringing up the new Warmoth strat today. It has a maple top/swamp ash body, in a color Warmoth calls 'Black Cherry'. The neck is wenge, with an ebony fingerboard and satine (bloodwood) stripe. The dots are coral stone. Frets are SS medium jumbo. Wenge necks are pretty heavy in the low mids. The tuners are locking Schallers, saddles, nut and string trees are Graph-Tech. The bridge is a Super Vee Bladerunner.
Pickups are a Classic Stack Plus, Five-Two, and Custom 5 (helps with the rather abundant low mids of the wenge). It has a Megaswitch, so the switching is:
1. Bridge
2. Middle + Bridge split
3. Bridge split + Neck split
4. Middle + Neck split
5. Neck

It is wired with a master volume, a tone for the SC pickups, and a tone for the HB. I used 3 YJM Low Friction pots, since I use all 3 all the time, sweeping through their range for effect.
Wenge is weird wood- the sawdust flakes off like pepper flakes..and it can cause rashes, and breathing problems. I got both before I read up on it. They use the saw dust to stun fish in fish farms. It is safe as a neck, as long as you aren't cutting into it.

Hows it sound? Surprisingly warm for a Strat, but it has that initial 'pop' at the beginning of notes which I love.

Thank you Warmoth, & SD for making this happen. Soundclips will be in a future blog.

Re: NGD! Warmoth, baby!

That is very nice! I'm looking to build another Strat with a flame maple top, but want more of a Charvel look. Thinking of Musikraft this time.

Re: NGD! Warmoth, baby!

Dope! I also have Warmie with an E.Indian Rosewood neck. Plays like Buttah. Sounds great. How many smakaroos? How much Moohlah< how many bones did you have to cough up? How many clams did dig up for that?

Thanks all! It was (and still is) a fun project. I am still tweaking a few things, and will probably not use it live until it settles in. I know building it yourself is certainly not cheaper than buying a guitar outright, but I got to choose what I wanted, and learned a lot. Ace, the next show I will use it at is the Lake House Blues Festival in November, since the only shows between now and then are either solo or duo shows.

Re: NGD! Warmoth, baby!

That's awesome. I love putting guitars together. It's nice when it all comes together. There's always that "settle in" period where lots of tweaks happen here and there.

I was able to assemble both of my partsocasters for less than what an American Standard costs today. I did the finish work myself and thankfully for me, I'm good with the basic woods (alder, maple, rosewood) so there's no upcharge. My latest has a MIM body that I snagged off eBay for cheap and it came with the pickguard, jackplate and jack. I had everything else laying around and just had to buy a neck.

Re: NGD! Warmoth, baby!

Reminds me of the old Valley Arts guitars, but nicer.Congrats!

Didnt Luk play those for awhile? And Larry Carlton? Back in the mid 80s?

Re: NGD! Warmoth, baby!

Yeah, both did- I never made the connection between mine and the Valley Arts...but yeah I see it!

Re: NGD! Warmoth, baby!

I'm in love... beautiful strat.
I'm currently getting a Jem built with a Wenge neck. Wenge is amazing. Congrats on your new beast!!!

Re: NGD! Warmoth, baby!
