Paid off the layaway for my Silverburst Les Paul yesterday and something else ended up following me home too. Guitar Center had this Variax Standard marked down to $400. So I thought for that price, I'd have a look. Well, I liked it. It sounded good (the magnetic single coils sound suprisingly good), and feels/plays nice too. The neck feels pretty good. I will say that it has that "cheap chopstick" feel to the neck's finish, but I think that's only because it's raw and wasn't sanded with too fine of a grit. Which is fine, because it let's your hand slide smoothly and freely up and down the neck. I think it'll be great for me when I'm out in the truck. So between the Variax and having Helix Native on my laptop, I should be able to cover everything I dabble in, especially after I program in one of my favorite tunings, CGCFAD. If you haven't tried a Variax yet, you should, you may be pleasantly surprised.
And about the Les Paul. It's a 2008 Standard Silverburst. It was a limited run that year and is basically a Class 5 Les Paul with a different finish. So the body was hollowed out at the factory. A previous owner put and EMG 81/85 set in it, which does mask the tone a bit, so I couldn't tell you what exactly a hollowed out Les Paul sounds like in person. Eventually, I'll probably move my Duncan Custom and Jazz over to it when I get around to getting some Suhr Thornbuckers for my '16 Standard. But that said, it plays and sounds great. It has a '60s neck, so the profile feels really good. It's in that "just right" sweet spot.
