NGD - Yamaha SG1000

Traded my PRS S2 Mira for this Japan-made instrument in Jade Green. The color is probably my favorite feature of this guitar haha!

Good deal, no?

Neck is like a Gibson 60s slim taper but a little fatter by the 12th fret onwards.

And though I haven't measured it yet, nut seems like a 42mm (maybe even 41mm like the EBMM Luke). Definitely narrower than a typical Gibson/Fender.

Talk about narrow... The body seems narrower than a Gibson SG/LP... But it's body is as thick as an LP. I wonder if an LP case would fit?

Body is a pancake body with a 3pc back. One of the joins (of the back) has opened up already (wood crack) and was stopped only by the control cavity. Maple cap is 2pc.

Finish feels like polyurethane, and quite thick at that. Reminds me of my Kramer Nightswan with the finish flaking off all over.

Tuners have been replaced. Svcks that it's got additional holes now... And chrome instead of gold. Pickups seem to be original, but the pickup rings surely are not.

Tone controls are push-push to split the coils. Scratchy. Do you know good replacement pots like these? Otherwise, might just get push-pull.

Still thinking of dropping in a Gibson 500T + 496R set, or...

Duncan JB + 59.

The JB sounded fantastic in the PRS S2 Mira btw.

Pretty happy so far. I have to wait until after the new year to bring this to my luthier... Glue the body crack... Fret level or full refret... And finally a pro set up for low action.

I will replace the electronics myself and clean up the bridge and stop tail.

It needs a lot of cleaning up, yes. I have some Dunlop deep cleaner and some Gibson metal polish.

I'm actually more concerned about the tailpiece rust than anything. The bridge is rusted too but doesn't seem to have sharp edges on the saddles which could break strings

Fab, those are great, though can be heavy as f**k :D.

Yes, the pups are original but the rings aren't; they'd have been black with two adjustment screws on the bass side.

Regarding pots, if you want push-push, Bourns make some, though they're kinda pricey per piece. The ones which came in the Yamahas (made by Noble) seem unique, being full sized pots with the small wiring module attached to the bottom with a bracket. I believe they were also 300k (volumes 500k).

How did the control "cavity" (which is an empty space) stop the crack?

I can't imagine a scenario where this would have been a good deal. Either you got the PRS as a give away, or your trade also got you $300 in your pocket, or your PRS was so trashed it would have taken $500 to make it playable.

I don't know much about this specific model, but from your description and from the photos, I would consider this a hunk of junk. It would take way more to fix it up to good condition than what it is probably worth (unless you value its worth at somewhere above $1000).

It would have gone all the way if not for the cavity

These are pictures I had the previous owner take and showed to my luthier before I offered my PRS

I got my PRS S2 below market price...

And even if it was at market price, it wasn't doing anything for me... It was a good guitar and built very well, but it wasn't something I would even pick up more often than my SG standard

The Yamaha has a better neck to me, and I love the color. First time having a pancake body guitar. Always have been intrigued with those LP deluxes with pancake bodies.

It is heavy alright. Feels solid, even with the body crack.

I'll look up those Bourns pots. I think I saw some on Tubesandmore, but didn't say what brand

Many years ago I had a SG 2000 on trial which was a pretty cool guitar stock. . But felt I I could not justify the price tag even though it was pre owned. Interestingly I recollect reading somewhere that like you Carlos Santana actually preferred his Yamaha SG to his PRS in his early days .

Sweet! First band I was in the other guitar player had one of those. Loved it.

Gonna take a lot of TLC to bring her back to life, but I'd say well worth the effort.

As for the Pancake - whatever. BC Rich glues wood on and it is boo-teek. Someone does a pancake and it is crap. Pffft. No worries.

Look forward to seeing update. Where is this body crack you speak of?
