NGD!

Re: NGD!

I've done this 5-way switch for several of my Tele's, more options than the typical 4 way mod and it uses a common Strat super switch:

The thing that bothers me about series is that it's so much louder than the single pickup positions, and that the in between B+N sound isn't frequently used with high gain, like if this were Les Paul scenario. So I don't use that option much, but I like that it's there.

Wow, this looks like a cool wiring scheme. I'm thinking about doing something different with my tele.

Would you care to post some clips of one of your teles so we can hear this?

Re: NGD!

Coolio, but the Baja got 4-way and S1 switch for phase. Could be useful if I mod a Tele in the future.

Do you have this wiring?

Classic Player Baja Telecaster

The Classic Player Baja Telecaster is a specialized Telecaster model with a four-way blade switch rather than the three-way switch typically found on most Telecasters. Without engaging the S-1 switch, the first three blade switch positions deliver standard Telecaster wiring, with a special in-series fourth position that creates a thicker tone with more output. Like so:

Position one: bridge pickup only
Position two: bridge and neck pickups in parallel
Position three: neck pickup only
Position four: neck and bridge pickups in series

Engaging the S-1 switch on this particular Telecaster ...

Position one: bridge pickup only
Position two: bridge and neck pickups in parallel and out of phase
Position three: neck pickup only
Position four: neck and bridge pickups in series and out of phase

if so, what's the tonal difference in sound between "bridge and neck pickups in parallel and out of phase" and "neck and bridge pickups in series and out of phase"? Is it series still louder than parallel, even though it's out of phase?

That's the one. Sound is pretty much the same difference as between the two in phase. Parallel OOP almost sounds like an acoustic when strummed, while series OOP got more of a snappy funk sound.

Re: NGD!

What is the push-pull doing?

And why 500k tone on a tele?

It's not actually my diagram, I just ignore the stuff not related to the 5-way switch.

OTOH, I do prefer 500k pots to 250k. If I want my guitar to sound dark, I roll the tone back, I don't hard wire in a permanent attenuation.

A push pull pot has 6 of these little connector things on the bottom, so to know what it would do we would need to see those.

That wiring diagram also has a treble bleed, so it doesn't get dark as quickly when you roll it down, but because the cap and resistor is in parallel it changes the roll off of the volume.

If you like out of phase, then it's a pretty neat diagram - thing is I've never found out of phase sounds terribly useful.

OP - that's a gorgeous guitar. I really like that butterscotch blonde on a telecaster.

I think it's dependent on genre. It's not a beautiful sound. I use it for ugly leads with bad attitudes when jamming out classic rock style.

Parallel OOP on the Baja would be useful for discrete strumming. Series for a nasal lead tone. I really like the versatility of it. It's not like it's in the way or anything.

Re: NGD!

That is one awesome looking guitar you got there! Congrats! There's many among us Tele enthusiasts who believe the Baja is one of the best Teles for the money out there.

Personally, I like to spend some time getting to know a new guitar before deciding on any mods. This way I know whether a mod is something I should actually do to improve the guitar instead or just because the stock configuration isn't something I'm used to.

Re: NGD!

Have to say I LOVE my Babicz bridge in my Tele , has alnico 3 custom handwound pups in it so it ain't right by any Telecaster standards Planet waves trim lok machines , Graphtech Tusq XL nut ,Tung Oiled neck, greasebucket mod , and really not right as far as Teles go ,just a diff sort of guitar show you some abby - normal options feel free to ignore me :)

Indeedy. So far I'm quite satisfied with it. Just contemplating some possible future upgrades with compensated saddles, for instance, if I feel it needs the upgrade. I'm not much of a tone pot twiddler tho, so I do consider some kind of mod to make it more useful to me. Possibly a ToneStyler or similar.

Re: NGD!

Congrats on the Baja. I like mine. Never felt the need to mod it, otherwise it's not gonna be a Baja anymore IMO.
