NGRPD: New Guitar Restoration Project Day

Hi guys.

An old friend of mine has recently been intouch asking if I'd like to restore, and keep, his old Explorer as he doesn't have the time or money for it anymore.

I've always liked the guitar, and have never owned an Explorer, so I jumped at it :D The guy that gave me the guitar seems to think there may be an issue with the neck but he's not sure.

He's had it since he was 16, so about 30 years, and it was a gift from his now wife so he didn't have the heart to have it looked at incase it came back that it couldn't be fixed and was therefore essentially worthless. All he's asked is that I get it looked at and that if it can be fixed, and if I can afford it, that I get the work done and then use it as he'd love to see it being used again.

Here's some pics:

The screws and pickup rings were in a bag, along with these

He recalls it as being a Jaydee brand guitar, but a friend of his is sure it's a Gordon Smith and he can't remember. It suffered a headstock break about 2 years after he got it and the headstock was painted over to hide the repairs, and he can't remember what it is.

I've given it a very quick clean down and have put some new strings on it to get some tension back in the neck so I can work out if there's any issue with the neck as he seems to think.

I'm taking it to a tech in a few weeks to get looked at properly, so I guess I'll see then if it's worth putting the time and money into.

Just thought I'd post incase anyone may be interested.

Cheers.

Craig

Cool project and very good of your mate Craig! I would think it's more like a JayDee because if it was a GS it would probably have the brass nut? Hopefully you can get it back in business :-)

Re: NGRPD: New Guitar Restoration Project Day

If you do get it back up and running, slap a set of Lace Deathbuckers in it, you won't regret it.

Re: NGRPD: New Guitar Restoration Project Day

Control placement and cream humbucker surrounds both scream John Diggins. (Mr. JayDee himself!)

Re: NGRPD: New Guitar Restoration Project Day

Is that control layout from the factory that way,or is/was the switch moved?

Anyway, looks like fun, hope it all works out!

I lerv my Epi!

That is original. There is no channel rout down to the tip of the bout.

Some JayDee Explorers have four control holes in a straight line, as seen in Brow's photographs. Some have five controls, tucked away in the corner of the lower bout, in SG formation.

Nice friend. His wife might be a little upset though when she finds out he gave it away. Is that a Jazz neck and what is that other one?

Re: NGRPD: New Guitar Restoration Project Day

Thanks guys

He's assured me he's spoken to his wife about it so I shouldn't worry about being in the middle of an argument between them!

Re: NGRPD: New Guitar Restoration Project Day

Just had this email:
Hi Craig

Thank you for your email.

I am pleased to confirm that this is one of our guitars. I have checked our log book and the serial number corresponds with a wine red Explorer made in 1982.

Best Regards
Andy

I may be mistaken, but I believe the J at the end there means MJ wound them. Sweet! Those are some oldies too. Hey Brow, very best man! Bring that old rocker back to life.

Re: NGRPD: New Guitar Restoration Project Day

Cheers guys!

I thought I remembered the 'J' at the end on the stickers meant MJ may've been involved but I wasn't sure.

I've got an appointment in a few weeks with my usual tech for him to check the neck out so he can tell me if it's worth the time and hassle.

I've re-strung it and the D and G Strings are too low at the 1st 2nd and 3rd frets so something is wrong somewhere, I just don't know how bad it is.

IF I go ahead with it, which I hope is the case, I may stick with the original pups as above or I may go for an EMG Het Set, I haven't decided yet.

Be sure to test the SD pickups. You may find that a vintage output humbucker in the neck position yields a surprisingly good Blues/Jazz tone.

Whatever works for you on an SG will also work pretty well on a JayDee "basic" model.

Yep. Most neck humbuckers I own are vintage/low output. I also quite like the Jazzs I've had in other guitars so no issue there :)

very cool!! Hopefully, its savable!! That would be killer if it is! Also, if there is no route down the bout, you could take the PG off.. Explorer love here!! Depending on any holes you have in your harum, Id take off the guard, paint it black, put a het set in and thrash!!!

Me too!

There's no routing under the scratchplate, but it just looked odd!

I'm also keeping the red, I tend to not go for black guitars much nowadays :)
