NILPHSD!!!

Re: NILPHSD!!!

You get Jose tones with the Chupacabra?? Really? Never really heard much about those amps, but I LOVE that tone!! yeah, I know you are right. Im not hell bent on getting anything else right now, just the BE demos all sound like it would be on point. I KNOW that my issue is my playing. I have great amps. The QR is stellar, JCM800 was always a dream amp of mine, and a PV Ultra Plus is pretty cool sounding too. So, it isnt the amps.. I used to dream, drool and slather over the SLO, but I luckily figured out that it wouldnt be right for me before I invested in one. I hear you have to crank em to really get full satisfaction for one. I know most tube amps are that way, but.. So, Yeah, Ive got a penny jar set aside and maybe once its been filled (about 200 times) Ill get a BE (or Chup now that you have my curiosity up. haha) But in the mean time, Im working on my playing so I can really enjoy what Ive got now.. One last thing, I also always dreamed of a Bogner xtc too. But Ive decided Im gonna get one of those red pedals one day, so I can dabble with the tone without full commitment.
Hope you keep loving your QR! they really are killer amps! And, I can get a pretty good tone from mine at lower volumes too, with the setting on the back..

Yup... I always sound like a variation of ME, no matter what I'm plugged-into. I've noticed about these boutique modded-Marshall style amps that their mids are their signature/defining characteristic. The Splawn is a certain mid character, and so does my Chup. My XTC and Shiva did. The SLO does (from what I've heard). That seems to be where it's at. But it's got to be something that your ear can stand long-term.

I finally got the Lindy Fralin Pure PAFs installed in my 2001 LP Standard and plugged her into the Splawn last night for a decently loud test drive. YUMMAY! I will say that the Fralins seemed to tame that characteristic mid tone of the Splawn a little. Made my tone more... (wait for it)... PURE!!! LOL!. I played along with a bunch of old school stuff last night and was just loving the tone I was getting. Boston, April Wine, Blackfoot, etc. They're definitely not a high-gain pickup though. I had to run the Splawn on 3rd Gear to get the OD-levels that I was looking for when trying to get something like the Tom Scholtz sustain. I was able to dial it back for April Wine and Blackfoot tones though.

I think you'd dig the Chupacabra. It's limited in that it's a one channel amp. But using the knobs and switches in there you can get just about ANY tone from the 80s. I'm going to plug my Fralin-loaded LP into the Chup tonight and see what I think.

Oh... and I run my Bogner Blue and Red pedals into my Fender Supersonic Twin and it sounds just like my XTC Classic (maybe a little more pissed-off, since I set the pedals on 20th Anniversary mode). So if you run the Bogner pedals into the right amp, they DEFINITELY give you that signature Bogner tone.

Re: NILPHSD!!!

I kinda did that for awhile. Traded off one amo for another and whatnot. But what broke that cycle was when I bought my JVM and a few months later found JVMforum.com. I started to get curious about mods, and since that place is a goldmine for JVM mods, I found them when Googling.

So now, if I get bored with an amp I mod it or try different speakers, both if which are much cheaper ways of mixing things up. And because of that, I actually play the JVM more than my Splawn or Recto. My next step is to get some Celestion G12K-100s. The caamp tried my Super Sonic through at the music store had them in it and I got the most beautiful, rich, sparkly, and full tones out of it. But when I got the SS home I was disappointed because my speakers didn't sound nearly as good.

Very cool man. I've been curious about the JVMs for a while. And I've been curious about the G12K-100s as well. Right now, I'm really wondering about the 75 watt Creme Backs.

Cool! can get the Bogner tone without that huge commitment! The Chup is a Ceriatone amp right? You have a 50 or 100 watter? Ive always heard good things about the Ceriatone amps, and the prices are reasonable.

Man, your taste in music is Killer!! Love April wine, Blackfoot and Boston! I have a long play record of Morning Dew by Blackfoot. Saw em years ago opening for Molly Hatchet and they played Morning Dew... Blacked out stage, then you see these red led lights. (Rickey had a Hamer with red leds for fret markers) and they whip out morning dew. Lets just say, what was left of my mind that night, was blown...

And lastly, I hear you about those pups.. Ive always gravitated toward higher gain pups. But my LP loaded with the WLH set is incredible sounding..

Re: NILPHSD!!!

The key to those Bogner pedals is what you run them through. The first time I tried an XTC Red, it was through the clean channel of a Fender HRD, and it sounded great. When I finally bought my first Bogner pedal (an Überschall) and later my XTC Red, neither sounded good in front of any of my heads at the time (JVM, Splawn, Recto). I did get good results running into the FX loop return, but that isn't exactly practical for me. So when Red Label posted that he had good results with his Super Sonic I made a mental note of it and left it for later.

Then a few months ago I remembered that one of the guitar shops I go to had a used SS 60 head, so I tried it out, put it on layaway, and shortly afterwards brought it home. Like I said above, I liked how the amp it's self sounded through G12K-100s better than my current speakers, but with the XTC Red in front of everything, it makes me grin, even with my current speakers.

Thanks! WE appear to have great taste in music! :-)

Yup, its a Ceriatone 50-watt Chupacabra. It's my third Ceri (also had a JTM45 and 36W RP). All were/are awesome amps. I can't recommend them highly enough.

The Fralins are great pickups for sure. Very clear and musical.

Re: NILPHSD!!!

Yeah... I've noticed that OD pedals in general are particular about what amps they really shine in front of (despite running the various amps mostly clean). My Plexitone shines in certain amps and doesn't in others. My OCD was the same. And the Bogners too (which is why I've had two Bogner Reds and two Plexitones). So far I definitely prefer the Bogner Red over the Blue running into my SS Twin. But I'm trying to hang on to the Blue for a while in case I find the amp that it prefers. Beyond tired of playing musical gear.... errrrrr... I mean musical chairs WITH gear. LOL!
