Re: NILPHSD!!!
Yup... I always sound like a variation of ME, no matter what I'm plugged-into. I've noticed about these boutique modded-Marshall style amps that their mids are their signature/defining characteristic. The Splawn is a certain mid character, and so does my Chup. My XTC and Shiva did. The SLO does (from what I've heard). That seems to be where it's at. But it's got to be something that your ear can stand long-term.
I finally got the Lindy Fralin Pure PAFs installed in my 2001 LP Standard and plugged her into the Splawn last night for a decently loud test drive. YUMMAY! I will say that the Fralins seemed to tame that characteristic mid tone of the Splawn a little. Made my tone more... (wait for it)... PURE!!! LOL!. I played along with a bunch of old school stuff last night and was just loving the tone I was getting. Boston, April Wine, Blackfoot, etc. They're definitely not a high-gain pickup though. I had to run the Splawn on 3rd Gear to get the OD-levels that I was looking for when trying to get something like the Tom Scholtz sustain. I was able to dial it back for April Wine and Blackfoot tones though.
I think you'd dig the Chupacabra. It's limited in that it's a one channel amp. But using the knobs and switches in there you can get just about ANY tone from the 80s. I'm going to plug my Fralin-loaded LP into the Chup tonight and see what I think.
Oh... and I run my Bogner Blue and Red pedals into my Fender Supersonic Twin and it sounds just like my XTC Classic (maybe a little more pissed-off, since I set the pedals on 20th Anniversary mode). So if you run the Bogner pedals into the right amp, they DEFINITELY give you that signature Bogner tone.
You get Jose tones with the Chupacabra?? Really? Never really heard much about those amps, but I LOVE that tone!! yeah, I know you are right. Im not hell bent on getting anything else right now, just the BE demos all sound like it would be on point. I KNOW that my issue is my playing. I have great amps. The QR is stellar, JCM800 was always a dream amp of mine, and a PV Ultra Plus is pretty cool sounding too. So, it isnt the amps.. I used to dream, drool and slather over the SLO, but I luckily figured out that it wouldnt be right for me before I invested in one. I hear you have to crank em to really get full satisfaction for one. I know most tube amps are that way, but.. So, Yeah, Ive got a penny jar set aside and maybe once its been filled (about 200 times) Ill get a BE (or Chup now that you have my curiosity up. haha) But in the mean time, Im working on my playing so I can really enjoy what Ive got now.. One last thing, I also always dreamed of a Bogner xtc too. But Ive decided Im gonna get one of those red pedals one day, so I can dabble with the tone without full commitment.
Hope you keep loving your QR! they really are killer amps! And, I can get a pretty good tone from mine at lower volumes too, with the setting on the back..
