No creme pickups?

Re: No creme pickups?

Dimarzio has a trademark on double creme, so only they can make double creme

You can try parchment maybe?

Re: No creme pickups?

You can order a zebra and reverse zebra then combine the creme coils. Then you can either keep the double black, or sell it. The custom is a really great pup to have around, you can use it as is or even use it for hybrids down the road.

Re: No creme pickups?

I agree with Clint 55, if there's a trademark or patent, then combining coils or ordering a custom color that will go with cream.

Re: No creme pickups?

The trademark only impedes of US based pickup makers. You can order double cream from Bare Knuckle Pickups, for example.

Re: No creme pickups?

A trademark on a color? Oh my goodness...that should not be allowed. Color belongs to everyone. Not just Dimarzio.

True, but they get away with it on design patent or trademark. Basically only forgein pickup manufactures can use that same combination. But let's say someone decided to blend another color like red or rows into the cream and relate a strawberry shake zebra pickup, or chocolate malt zebra pickup color scheme they could trademark that and get away with it. And Dimarzio won't beabketocopy as their stateside too.

Re: No creme pickups?

We need to find a little Korean pickup winder willing to do very exacting work for Duncan...

Re: No creme pickups?

Wanting double cream got me looking towards DMZ. The quest uncovered the 36 Anniversary set and yes, they work well with a SG.

Re: No creme pickups?

That trademark is most stupid thing I've ever heard in my life. That and the trademark on PAF name (which Gibson humbuckers bore when Larry D. was still wearing his diapers). These things are so bizarre and irritating, that I will never buy a pickup from DiMarzio.

Re: No creme pickups?

I still don't understand the obsession that some have with double cream. Seems like a case of wanting forbidden fruit.

I don't care about double creme humbuckers. I care for stupid trademarks that limit consumer options, not only in guitar industry but everywhere.

I don't get it either, as it does nothing for me. I'm all about flat black.

Re: No creme pickups?

First time I saw Jeff Beck he was making his way across the dance floor of the Grande Ballroom in 1967, cradling his 59 Les Paul in his arms.

It had two double cream humbuckers, just like Eric Clapton's Les Paul.

I went up and said something like: "Hey man...you're my favorite guitar player. Can I shake your hand?"

Beck stopped, smiled, shifted his guitar to his left hand, extended his right hand and said: "Oh! That's great. Thanks!"

Ever since then I've had a thing for double cream humbuckers.

Here's my PRS SE Singlecut:

Back in the late '70s, Gibson humbuckers were black. Any time you saw double cream, it told you, "This guy modded his guitar with Dimarzios, so he must care about tone." That kind of supports Larry's idea of the trademark, but 40 years down the road, it just pisses people off.

Similar to Lew, there were couple of iconic guitars that planted the double-cream ideal in my head. They were the earliest Hamer Standards played by Rick Nielsen with Cheap Trick, the sunburst #0000 and the natural maple #0004. Both had double-cream real-deal Gibson PAFs in the bridge position. Eventually, Hamer ran out of old PAFs in the parts drawer and started using DiMarzios. When I wanted my Korean Hamer Sunburst to look like a '70s Hamer, I went out of my way to get a double-cream/zebra set, and NOT buy DiMarzios.
