No feedback from these!

I have a Cort Yorktown BV which had the Cort alnico 2 classic rocker II humbuckers. For a fully hollow body it was not prone to feedback but it's tone was somewhat muffled - is it because of all this wax?

It's got Gibson Classic 57 PAF reissues in now, which I don't think are fully potted but sound much nicer....

Does wax sap tone ?

Honestly I doubt it. It's more likely that you're comparing a budget OEM Asian pickup to a higher end USA one even if it isn't a particularly good example. Some higher output 'buckers (like Gibson Iommi sigs) are actually potted in epoxy and it seems to work fine for those.

Re: No feedback from these!

My guess is that it is just the tone of that particular pickup, although, man, that's a lot of wax.

I'm guessing they figured the wax layer on the baseplate added some more vibration damping to the pickups. I wonder it they are also vacuum potted.

I also doubt that the wax, inside or out, is the main reason why the pickups sound "muffled".

I actually removed all that wax & the cover from mine, it may sound slightly brighter to my ears now. Those are not worth the time to take apart unless for parts.

Whatever the reason those pickups are relegated to the parts bin... maybe good for a cigar box
