No verb or delay??

The more I look at other players boards and rigs I am simply blown away by the number of players I see with 2, 3 even 4 delay pedals and in many cases they also have reverb pedals and/or amp reverb.

I'm curious...do any of you guys play dry all or most of the time???

I know dry to some mean no effects at all but I'll let modulation, fuzz, wah, whatever else pass for this...I'm just asking about reverb and delay.

Anybody use none???

Re: No verb or delay??

I wouldnt mind getting to the point where i only use old Fender Tanks, real Leslies, an old restored tape echoplex , a old wah and a Muff or Fuzzface fuzz, a Mutron Bi-phase and maybe a classic overdrive or two and direct from guitar to NMV Fender or Marshall amp.

That said, I also want a high gain rig, so that would mean a Chorus pedal,a delay pedal, and a Hot rod Splawn/SLO Marshall or Mesa Recto or similar flamethrower amp.

Re: No verb or delay??

I add just a touch of reverb from my amp (Fender BluesJr). I find it adds a little body, and in the mix, it just sounds rounder and more natural. I use delay for some riffs and solos, but it's rare.

Re: No verb or delay??

I use none a great majority of the time. I've actually just recently started making an effort to use some.

Re: No verb or delay??

With a nice warm loud Marshall tone, like ala Thin Lizzy, I don't use verb or delay. But I do use minimal reverb most of the time. I also like a super subtle analog delay on harder rock tones. But I could NEVER use 3 or 4 delay pedals. I can imagine if I was in a Floyd style type band, or a progressive type thing maybe I would need all those textures, but for my styles I just don't need that.

Re: No verb or delay??

I play 100 percent dry about 1 percent of the time and that's not counting acoustic couch jamming.

Re: No verb or delay??

I will usually put reverb on an amp if it has it, just a little bit. I have used delays in the past but not any now.... Lately I have just been playing into the Mesa or one of my old 50s reel to reels and none of them have reverb. The Mesa is my dream amp, the cleans are amazing and the dirt is perfect. It is so versatile and I have just been playing my strat into it. Been really happy, don't plan to make changes anytime soon.

Re: No verb or delay??

Despite having a delay on my board, I rarely use it. I also have reverb on only one of my 4 amps - I have it turned off 99% of the time. I like a dry sound. I find reverb just makes things sound muddled. Also, it's like distortion - easy to hide sloppy technique behind it.

Re: No verb or delay??

I am into dirt and distortion/fuzz mainly for my heavy downtuned rock music, but if I change anything it would be doing a keeley mod to my ratII, or replacing the ratII for a delay if I get into delay.

pedals:

proco ratII distortion
black arts toneworks pharaoh fuzz
jerry cantrell wah
decimator g string noisgate
tc electronic polytune full size
amp controller: channel changer, reverb, and attenuator which works as volume boost

Re: No verb or delay??

Only 1 of my amps has reverb on it and it's always switched off.

I do have 2 delay pedals but have only ever used 1 of them for self oscilation effects, never as a 'normal' delay.

I am thinking about trying a reverb pedal as my 2 current main amps are very dry and tight sounding but I haven't gotten around to it yet :D

Re: No verb or delay??

Built-in reverb, at least a touch, for almost everything I play. No reverb pedals or delay pedals, except the occasional recording done with my Deluxe Memory Man. I inherited that pedal, though. I never would have bought it. I also have a tremolo pedal.

Re: No verb or delay??

I always use a touch of reverb when I'm playing through my Deluxe Reverb or Princeton Reverb amps. Always have.

But I don't have any problem playing without reverb when I blow through my tweed Fenders: my Princeton/Harvard or Fender Super. Sometimes I'll use my EH Memory Man or my Line 6 Verbzilla. Sometimes not. The Verbzilla is sitting right on top of my Princeton/Harvard amp in my profile picture.

I prefer a little reverb or a little echo but I don't mind playing without either.

Re: No verb or delay??

Back in the days it was mostly dry as a desert when playing live stuff....as I used to play in mostly large settings, one would simply drown out with lots of verb and delay...
For recording....just what ever that fits..
I am as happy dry as with some delay and verb...

Re: No verb or delay??

Reverb & delay sound great when you're just playing by yourself, but put it into the context of a mix in a live band situation and it can cause all kinds of problems. If two guitarists are using two different reverbs/delays, combined with the natural reflections from the walls, it can all collide into a confusing mess, and when you're onstage listening mostly to your own amp you might not even realise it's happening. So I prefer to keep the signal dry and let the sound engineer add reverb to whatever would benefit from it, (where available) which would normally be primarily vocals.

Re: No verb or delay??

I use delay and reverb as deliberate effects not as leave it on all the time style (for mixing this is totally different). The sound of reverb before amp speakers never sounds like real reverb and IMHO is better as an effect. I play dry alot of the time but then sometimes have 6 different fx during a song. I have started using delay for big solos but am trying to scale it back as it sounds a bit too cheesy. Want to get an M9 though to get nicer reverbs.

No verb or delay??

On my board at the minute, I have a Verbzilla, a Boss RV-3, a DD-20 and an EHX Memory Boy. For the style of music I normally play (spacey, post/noise-rock weirdness) it's usually important to have a couple of different options for textures and ambience. To be fair, it's mostly either just the Memory Boy or the RV-3. I mostly use the DD-20 for the looper and I hardly ever use the Verbzilla, despite it being a really awesome sounding pedal. I'm actually considering selling it to make room on my board for my recent modulation cravings.
