NOGD - Take Two (i.e. let's try this again!)

How time flies.

A little under two years ago I posted a NGD about a black late '90s (probably '97 or '98) Japan ESP Horizon I had gotten on a trade for one of my three Washburn MGs:

The guitar was originally a studio axe and it showed. Nicks, scratches, belt rash plus a couple of chips here and there while the neck had such a thick film of sweat and grime that it had actually seeped underneath the finish!
The pu rings had surface cracks, the German Floyd Rose had grime and rust everywhere and the blocks had seen better days. The backplate is also (still) missing.

The 3-year-old strings and non-existent setup didn't allow me to properly evaluate the playability but the neck was straight with a nice shape that fit my hand beautifully, the body was light and resonant while even in that condition she sounded great.

So, I took her to my tech and told him to whip her into shape and also asked to check what could be done about the aesthetics. He told me he'd give it to a guy he worked with that refinishes guitars.

Apparently the damage was too extensive for touch-ups to make sense so he'd need to refinish her. I told him that I wanted her in the color of my first guitar, an MiM Fender Strat in Midnight Blue and even took him the actual guitar to make sure there'd be no "photo-matching" nonsense and waited. Not gonna bore you with the details but after twenty months and every single excuse in the book I FINALLY got the guitar back yesterday!

The Floyd was disassembled and thoroughly cleaned and the blocks replaced, the electronics cavity was covered in copper foil and the electronics themselves redone while the pickups were replaced with a neck '59 which sounds surprisingly well in that guitar plus a Tom Anderson H3 in the bridge.

She is not 100% there yet as a couple of things I requested be done simply slipped through the cracks while some others will need to be adjusted after I had some time to play her but I can tell you so far I'm liking her a lot!

BTW, this is the Strat she was supposed to look like:

Even though he did not match it very well in real life the two are closer than what these photos might suggest. The color tone was mostly a match (and closer to the Strat photo than the ESP one) but the shade is appreciably lighter. I still like it though so I don't mind.

I'm like that with my guitars, my first electric guitar ever was Pelham Blue, now most of my custom builds are Pelham Blue or similar.

Re: NOGD - Take Two (i.e. let's try this again!)

That is sweet

I got an RG2 in what Ibanez calls Jewel Blue
Kinda purplish

Then got my truck repainted to the same color.
But they still didn't quite match

Then I saw this Maxima on a car lot

That durned puppy just pop's up everywhere

Re: NOGD - Take Two (i.e. let's try this again!)

What is it with guitar techs taking too long, not completing a job, and giving every excuse under the sun?

Every single tech I've used has been like this. Last one had my guitar for a year.

YouTube videos to figure out how to do that thing you want

Re: NOGD - Take Two (i.e. let's try this again!)

Thanks guys (and infant canine!).

Truth is, even though I've owned her for a little over one and a half years already, it feels like a New Guitar Day, in every way. When I first got her I didn't really enjoy her because of the condition she was in and I gave her to my tech only a couple of weeks later at which point, it was the last time I even laid eyes on her, until now... :D

BTW ehdwuld, as much as I love build/project threads and respect the ones that do the work (Ayrton ;) ), I would be terrified to try a refin job on a guitar without ever trying it before (plus, I wouldn't want to drive the resale value of the guitar even lower!)

Re: NOGD - Take Two (i.e. let's try this again!)

Well, it took a long time, but it looks like it came out fine, so that's good!

I went through a very long process when I had a Les Paul re-fretted. The poor guitar sat in my closet for years because I had worn the frets down so low it wouldn't play well, and I didn't trust anyone here to do the operation. I do almost all guitar work myself except for major stuff like that. I finally sent it to a friend of mine on the other coast who said he knew someone he could trust. And, only 7-8 months later, and after "every excuse in the book," I got Lester back. The end result is awesome, but it did take a long time.

Re: NOGD - Take Two (i.e. let's try this again!)

*Sigh*, which brings us to guitar no. 2, which in chronological order is actually guitar no. 1.

Remember the Strat from the 2nd post in this thread?

Yep, you guessed it, " The poor guitar sat in my closet for years because I had worn the frets down so low it wouldn't play well".

See, the OTHER reason I took said Strat to the tech was exactly that.

Because of the ordeal with the ESP he knocked off 50 euro off the refret price but I'm gonna have to wait a good couple of months.

On the other hand, not gonna lie, this is hardly as painful as the ESP 'cause it's not my newest acquisition (in fact I'll HAVE my latest acquisition to keep me busy) plus, I haven't been playing her already as it were.

I've seen signs at my mechanic shop

You can have good work
You can have fast work
You can have cheap work
But you must choose only two

THAT is very very true :beerchug:

It looks like tone guy did a heck of a job on the finish. It looks smooth as glass. Is that a poly topcoat or nitro? Either is great, I was just wondering. Congrats on finally getting it back and looking sweet.

Awesome Bro!!!! Congrats!!! Enjoy!!
Thanks bro, it has been a long time coming and it's not entirely finished yet. I believe there'll be some new photos coming tomorrow ;)

Poly, not that I mind. The original finish was poly too and he only went as far down as the primer, then reshot from there.

The color was actually mixed by him as it is a metallic color and he couldn't find it ready-made.
