Noise Gate...?

im not sure if i understand these things...they get rid of excess noise? or is that a noise supressor? i heard that a noise gate helps real heavy distortion stay articulate, but does it help with that excess hum i get when i click on distortion? also, does it help at all with feedback? because i have been having some major feedback issues with the new guitar, im pretty sure it's the EMG's...or maybe the Diamond Plate is causeing some feedback, idk but i want one of two things. either a noise gate or at least what i think a noise gate does. or a guitarport. that guitar port is looking REALLY good for recording and stuff, but i think that the noise gate might be more important seeing and my band is starting to get a bunch of gigs....so would a noise gate be beneficial or should i go for the guitar port?

A noise gate/supressor is the same kind of thing. They will get rid of SOME extra noice, and when there is no signal pasing through (when you are NOT hitting a string) they kinda 'mute" the signal so even under HEAVY gain there is no feedback when you're not playing...if you get a good one, and learn how to use it correctly they can be useful, but be warned that can also be tone killers!!!

Re: Noise Gate...?

a boss ns-2 works great for this. gets rid of the hum from a distortion pedal like it was never there. go ns-2 send, distortion pedal input, distortion output into the return of the ns-2 then out the output. also works pretty good for a noisy guitar.

However they don't work on tube amplifier distortion. Or it doesn't work for me anyways. i Ran mine through the effects loop. Technically it worked a little bit but not enough

Re: Noise Gate...?

All a noise gate does is cut off any signal below a set threshold, hence the term "gate." A good noisegate has no discernable effect on signals above that threshold.

Re: Noise Gate...?

I own a NS-2 you cannot go wrong for the money and quite a few top notch players use them.

Re: Noise Gate...?

so the noisegate will work with my amp well, it's a peavy XXL, i dont use ne distortion pedals so i can just run it through the effects loop and it should cut back on the feedback i get and the hum from distortion, the hum doesn't really bother me it's jsut the feedback i have been getting with my new guitar.

Re: Noise Gate...?

I hear the Rocktron Hush Super C is the most transparent, effective noise gate ever. Never tried it myself, but all the pro's seem to use them. I have a Boss NS-2 and it's pretty sweet. The noise gate on my Boss ME-50 is a little better. Boss makes great stuff though.
