Noise Gates and Noise Suppressors?

What's the difference between the two? How do noise gates like the old Rocktron Hush 2B (which I think is out of production) affect noise and your sound as opposed to units like Rocktron's new Hush Super C/Hush The Pedal noise suppressors and Boss's NS-2?

I've been through them all and the very best out there right now is the ISP Decimator and Boss NS-2. I've had the rackmount HUSH Super C before and gone through their pedal (which in particular was complete junk).

A noise suppressor, from what I've gathered, is exactly the same as a noise gate. Essentially, you set at which frequency the noise gets cut out. If you set it too high, it will cut off notes and sustain. From my experiences, they're both the same thing with different names.

hmm... I know rocktron used to make the 2B GATE, and I heard people making references to opening and closing the gates, Dime in particular... so are you sure they're the same thing?

Maybe they wanted to say where it's good to use a noise gate and where not because it might cut off some high frequencies which are essentially for some riffs... but that's just a guess

I dunno, haven't tried any of the new stuff. I've used an MXR noise gate for a long time. I'm able to set it to cut off the hum without having any effect on my tone or my playing that I can notice, even on the quiet parts. It works, no problem, so I can't see where anything else would be much of an improvement.

It just says MXR Noise Gate/Line Driver. I think it was one of the first ones to come out, it's at least 25 years old.

I've heard the decimator was awesome and really worth the $120 price tag. Is it really worth it?

The ISP Decimator works great with my setup. To me, cutting out extra noise is well worth $120. It's the only way I can get noiseless tone with my single coils and P90s through an overdrive channel. That, to me, is worth it. I'd say for the cash, Boss is the best bet, but I wouldn't change a thing about selling it and getting the ISP (although the Boss did almost keep up with the ISP for cutting out noise).
