It tends to add an annoying high-end, so I generally avoid them. I do tend to go back and forth, but at the moment, I'm just dealing with high-gain hiss. I usually get a high signal-to-noise ratio, so it's not THAT big a deal, but when you fire up the amp and hear that white noise, it's annoying. Then I just tune up, play, and forget about it.
By the way, if using a software noise gate for recording counts, then I should have voted that way.

Not yet. Haven't found one that I like. The current one that I have in my TC Nova System just seems to kill my sound too quick. And if I back off on it, it's useless. I dunno... maybe I'm doing something wrong.
I usually just switch over to the clean channel on whatever amp I'm using whenever there's silence. That's plenty noiseless enough at gigs.

I use the one in the GSP1101, which is triggered by the guitar input, but activates in the effects loop of my amp A la ISP.
It works really well!
For general background hiss, I prefer a "downward expander" like Rocktron's HUSH "The Pedal", Although people have said that they kill a tiny amount of high end, which is easy enough to get around.
For straight up feedback squeals, you need an actual GATE.

I never use one but I will be interested to see how the noisegate on my Powerball works. I try to get the maximum distortion possible with the amp or a pedal without creating too much noise.
This is not something I know about. The way I see it there are basically 2 options:
1. Use a noisegate
2. Use premium cables, connectors, low noise tubes, excetera... and good technique to get heavy sound without tons of distortion.
Those of you in the know enlighten me please because this is all I know about eliminating noise in a rig.

No noise gate will ever come within a country mile of my rig. Period.
I have yet to try one that doesn't screw with dynamics in some way.
Some noise is reasonable and expected with a high gain rig. If your rig is so noisy that you need a noise gate, don't put a band aid on the problem. Find the source of your noise and fix it for good.

I got one to use when I use the HM-2 for the chainsaw, but I still haven't messed with it.

While my NS-2 does suppress a little bit of hiss, the real glory of it is the buffer within. I actually played straight into my amp today and compared that to a 10 ft cable into the NS-2 with the 6' cable to the amp....the difference was mind blowing. I couldn't believe how dull it was with just the 6' cable.

Nope, never have
I've never had a guitar that had uncontrollable feedback, even the ones with single coils hum but not when I'm playing or anything. Plus tuner pedals are just as much mutes as they are tuners
