I love my Gibson P-90s on my SG classic
But that HUMM!!!!!!
anyone knows of noiseless p90s ?

anyone tried the p-90 EMGs ?

Re: Noiseless P90 ?

There's a Duncan P-90 stack, I believe. Kent Armstrong also makes one. Never tried the EMGs, though, I tend to fear active pickups.

Re: Noiseless P90 ?

Sorry, that is not correct. A stack pickup is hum cancelling on its own.

That is correct, it's a stacked coil design and does a pretty good (not perfect) job of replicating a true P-90 tone without hum. They are taller than a standard P-90 though and may require your pickup cavity to be routed deeper.

Re: Noiseless P90 ?

I got a pair of P-100's, Gibson's stacked humcancelling 90's. Tonally - meh. P-90 esque. But quiet...

Re: Noiseless P90 ?

I've played P100's and they are just lame. Thick, dull and lifeless, like rolling the tone pot on a real P90 back to about 4.

Haven't tried them myself but I've heard the Duncan P90 stacks aren't much better.

So I'm waiting for Kinman to come out with one.

Re: Noiseless P90 ?

I've always found stacked P90's leave a lot to be desired. I don't know if Duncan has any plans to add the technology from their Classic Stack Plus to the P90 arena, but that might be a nice idea.

I've found P90's respond fairly well to a complete shielding. There's usually enough room under the cover to simply wrap the pickup in shielding tape. It's far less tone-altering than a bottom coil, and it usually makes the P90 more manageable.

Re: Noiseless P90 ?

usually i dislike dimarzio, but after you pointed me in that direction and reading some reviews i shall try it out soon i think, right after i go shield all the cavities, though i heard p90s pick up more hum and even shielding has a long way till it helps

Re: Noiseless P90 ?

SD, Dimarzio, and I'm sure others make a variety of humbuckers which fit into P-90 slots.

Re: Noiseless P90 ?

I have a set of Gibson P100s for sale - $85 shipped. PM me if interested.

Re: Noiseless P90 ?

Just be a man and deal with the hum.

Consider it your penance for wielding the awesomeness that is P-90 tone. Tone that dangerous must come at a price.

Re: Noiseless P90 ?

I actually think Lace makes one of the best stacked P-90's as far as tone is concerned.
I'm not a fan of their Lace Sensors, but I understand these are a very different design, and they sound great. http://www.agi-lace.com/electric_pickups/ps_900_905/soapbar_specs.php

But I'm dying to try a set of Lindy Fralin's new noiseless P-90's. He makes a wicked soapbar, and would never release a pickup unless it was world-class tone. http://www.fralinpickups.com/p90s.asp

I've tried Duncan's, Dimarzio, and Gibson's, and while they're all good, they do lack some of that P-90 mojo.
