I just spent quite a bit of time jamming on my soapbar-sized EMG 60a in the neck position of my PRS soapbar. It sounds surprisingly similar to the stock soapbar. Of course it is not the same, but it has many qualities in common, such as getting that honk when you dig in with the pick and having a lighter glassy tone when picked lightly. It has some definite vintage vibe to it, and sounds and feels more like a soapbar or PAF than does the EMG 85 in the bridge. The 85 is very even and smooth, while the 60a is snappier, ruder, bites, and makes you work for the sound you want much like a regular soapbar does. With a little work from the volume knob and EQ, I can get jazzy tones, twangy tones, stratty tones, all that. I have it wired stock, running on one battery only. So if actives are something that interest you, a set of soapbar-sized EMG 60a's would give you a dead silent, vintage-voiced and versatile axe that can get mighty close to attaining a variety of tones similar to those of your stock pickups.

alex1fly, testify. enjoyed the P85/P60A reviews, btw.
i have an se soapbar myself and have so far avoided the stacks as the general consensus isn't good and i didn't want to rout the pockets and risk losing any of that sweet resonance. i did find that with a DMZ DLXplus neck pickup in the bridge and a tonerider h90 in the neck, the regular soapbar/single-coil alnico neck pup seemed to shout the hum-cancelling ceramic bridge pup down. i'm guessing that the 2 coils in the DLX plus are the same wire type and DC res as tonally it was nowhere near the tonerider, there was phase-cancellation all over the joint and it didn't lend itself to the gui.
it looks like the DMZ virtual p90 i have has 1 reg coil (i'm guessing these are the same size as mini-humbucker/sidewinder coils..?) and 1 virtual vintage coil (has the extra ferrous material), so i plan to swap out the small ceramic mag and the 3 strips of iron for an a4 mag at some stage and see what happens with this in the bridge. after everything i've read on here and the web in general there's a very good chance i'll fit a SD vintage mini-humbucker in the neck and a DMZ super dist p90 in the bridge. just seems that either single-coils or double-coils are the go
i was very keen on some stacked duncan p90s a while ago but their cost down here is BS. was forced to try some other options.
all this talk about smearing butter's making me hungry
