Noisy Strat Scratch Plate

I'm gettting lots of [microphonic] noise via the scratch plate of my Peavey Predator Strat copy, and if what Google tells me is correct, there's not a great deal I can do about it without replacing it for a multi layered one :?:

Not static, no. I'd thought that I'd perhaps not potted the p'ups I'd been working on properly, as I'd get microphonic style thuds if I clipped the covers with the pick, only to realize it was also present if tapping the scratch plate as well. I repotted anyway, but it's still there. It's particularly bad in the center, so thought it something to do with flexing, but then thought that would just as likely show up with any set of pickups in there, which it doesn't.

Re: Noisy Strat Scratch Plate

The stock pickups might indeed be microphonic (if they are the stock pickups). Inexpensive guitars usually have some sort of microphonics going on. I had a guitar that I could talk into the pickups and hear myself clear as day.

Re: Noisy Strat Scratch Plate

The stock pickups went microphonic years ago, and I repotted them fine, but these are pickups I've made myself. Average spec Strat pickups I've done previously are fine, it's only an issue recently with these higher output ones I've made.

Google brings up similar discussions, mainly centered around reference to single/multi ply scratch plates, but I didn't spot a definitive answer, or explanation as to why that's an issue while I was at it.

Swapped the magnet config to alnico rods, and the noise went. Same coils, so must've done something wrong with the ceramics + steel slugs somewhere!

My carvinwas like that you could use them as a microphone.
