None More Black - Duncans and some aesthetic upgrades

So, a couple of years ago I bought a second hand Ibanez RG321, which stock looked like this (stolen pic):

A bit unusual for Ibanez, since it's a hardtail mahogany body. Wizard II neck in standard Maple/Rosewood.

However, the previous owner was as mod-happy as a SDUGF member, and it looked like this:

He'd replaced the pickups with some un-branded ones with worn-nickel covers. At a rough guess they were some kind of hot PAF style. Ok, but not spectacular, especially for drop-tunings. He also switched-in CTS pots, switchcraft pickup-switch and jack socket, Grover locking Rotomatics (black), and added a couple of mini-switches for coil-splitting.

Since I wanted to play metal in Drop-C and lower, I switched the pickups for Distortion/Jazz, which are great. They clean up really well with the coil-splits too.

The hardware was now in 4 different colours! (the original black-chrome/cosmo black, and upgrades in chrome, worn nickel, and black) So to try and make the appearance more uniform I switched everything I could to black. I also used some rosewood-coloured stickers to cover the inlays. They're far from perfect, but it's more subtle than the original white plastic.

I was kinda inspired by Blackmachine and Hufschmid's more understated builds (though I'll never own one of those!).

Also, thanks to Jolly for recommending pickup covers with no holes for trembuckers!

Anyway, here goes :headbang::

Nicely done! I do love the look of the worn nickel BUT I prefer uniformity in hardware and the black looks really sharp. Enjoy!

Can you die or stain a rosewood board without ruining it? Hmmmmm

So where were these trem spaced humbucker covers purchased from?

Very cool. Love that no pore filler finish.

Just on eBay (UK). I was worried about the quality given the price, but they don't seem to have affected tone.

Jolly has bought these and liked them (USA) :

I recently covered a pair of Dimarzios with solid, no hole covers. Gold plated, nickel silver cover. May have gotten them from Philadelphia Luthier. Cant recall. At any rate, I agree, they didn't affect tone anything more than very subtly. Downside is that you cant adjust the individual poles. But string to string balance is fine. I'm happy with them.

The after Mod version of this guitar is probably the first solid body Ibanez I've seen in years that I'd actually like to own!!! Absolutely beautiful!!!! Whoever did the mods did a great job!!!

You'd be surprised at what may lie under that black finish.

I used this to darken my fretboard. Super easy to do, it doesn't "stick" to frets or inlays. One application made it a lot darker, the next took it to ebony black. Just make sure you mask off the maple part of the neck (unless you want that black, too)

+1

The open grain finish reveals all - including where one section of grain ends and another begins! ;)

I have a Crafted In Indonesia example of that model. Its finish appears thinner and less glossy than the OP's guitar. Plays as well as some Prestige models. With my choice of pickups and controls, the guitar does a mean Gilmour/Hendrix/Prince sound.
