North-Parallel-South wiring

I would like to wire a 4 wire Humbucker (59 neck) North-Parallel-South. I can find North-Series-South but have had no luck finding N-P-S. Can someone point me in the right direction?

The only thing I want to point out (which is probably part of your plan, but not everyone thinks about these things), is that there is NO series option available for this pickup if you use either one of these.

Re: North-Parallel-South wiring

Thanks BriGuy. I know there will be no series option. This is why I am considering doing it. As I said above, the pickup is now wired Series-South-Parallel. If I use it in series the volume is considerably higher than any other setting I have, even the bridge pickup in series. I like having a broad choice of tones so I think I'll try it. I'll report back...thanks again.

No problem at all!

Re: North-Parallel-South wiring

So I'm considering making the above change in wiring, going to North-Parallel-South which will eliminate the Humbucker in series. What I'm wondering about is how much actual difference in tone there will be between using the North Single Coil and the South Single Coil. Would appreciate anyone's experience with this set up.

Re: North-Parallel-South wiring

If you haven't wired this yet, I prefer this method:

BriGuy's method works fine, but it leaves one coil "hanging" on the hot side of the circuit when not selected. It has the potential to act as a noise antenna. I'm really not sure how much of a problem this really is, but if it can be easily avoided, why not? :)

In my experience the difference between a north coil and a South coil is practically nothing to the ear, unless you're using a Humbucker that has mis-matched coils (like a P-Rail).

I have one guitar where I added a switch that chooses between inside coils and outside coils when I have the coil split switch pulled. I cannot hear any difference on the individual pickups, but when using both pickups there is a very noticeable difference.

Also, if you're going to do this mod, use ArtieToo's diagram instead… It's a great idea!

Exactly. The one good reason for doing north/south switching is simply for the sake of hearing for yourself what the difference is.

Re: North-Parallel-South wiring

Ok, I figured there might not be much of a difference. Next question; is there a way to "tame" the Humbucker when it is in series. The difference in volume is considerable and I would like to be able to go to it without also going for the volume knob. I'm very new to modding and don't know much at all about the electronics involved, capacitors, resisters and all that stuff. Thanks for the input so far.

Yup. Although I recently found a good use for it. I just put a single-sized humbucker in my HSH. I had the neck and bridge set up to split in opposite directions in order to get hum-canceling when split. The pickup I replaced was a stacked single, so I didn't have to worry about hum-canceling before but suddenly I had a choice to make. I opted for South/Series/North so I can pick the split based on the pickup with which I plan to pair it.

Not that I know of. Parallel is probably closest to "tamed series." Adding resistors or caps will change your tone somewhat (which may or may not be desirable).

You could go with a series/split/parallel switch, run it typically in parallel or split and switch to series for a "lead boost."
