Not another fuzz thread..

Ok, sorry to do this guys, but I've done some searching and since I'm on a tight budget, I want to get as many good suggestions as possible.

I've played metal/hardcore most of my life now, and I have the tone I want for that. I've been asked to work on a stoner rock/alt side project ala fu Manchu and early clutch style which is totally different from where I am now. Where fuzz should I start!? I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of the fuzz face stuff? I'm really new at fuzz and pedals in general so please be patient. Thanks guys.

For stoner/doom stuff (which is exactly what I play in my band) you don't want a fuzz face, it's too loose in the bottom end. What you want is a muff of some sort. On a budget, the Bass Big Muff (yes, used for guitar) is a no brainer at $80 new. If you've got a budget that's a bit bigger, I've heard great things about the BYOC Large Beaver for $90. I'm assuming your budget isn't much bigger than $125, so if you can bump it up to that, there's the Ronsound Hairpie which comes in three different flavors.

Seriously, for anything roomy, muffs are your best friend.

Another vote for any variation of the big muff.

Everdrone's suggestion is great but it is "just" a modifies big muff. I own one and it's great but whenever I turn it off and plug my triangular big muff, I can' help but notice that 90% of the pharaoh's tone is already in there...

The black arts look great but with my limited use of fuzz I feel like that would be buying the Swiss army knife for the bottle opener. I REALLY like it but in all honesty I may not use this outside of the project. A muff style would be good, they're fairly common to find used and will probably fall more in to my price range. Ok great, thanks guys, now when i take a trip to the shop I'll know where to start.

Don't get me wrong Drone, it's a kickA$$ pedal that I'm happy to have at my disposal, it really is great and has a few awesome tricks up its sleeve. I'm not weighing negatively on the pedal at all, especially considering how good it sounds and how reasonable the price is new.
It's just that the circuit is pretty much a slightly modified BMP and, while I know lots of folks hail it as being totally different from a muff, ab'ing it and a muff, one must admit that there's a lot of the Black arts ground that is covered by a standard muff (at least a triangle muff)... I'd say between 80 and 90%.

Doesn't make it a bad pedal at all... it's definitely worth every penny but one "could" save a few bucks and just get a normal muff if really on a budget.

Big Muff style pedal for sure... play with the tone knob and gain knob a lot when you get it , there are a lot of cool sounds in muffs not jus that wall of sound fuzz with the gain cranked

well some folks ( I used to be one of them) think that Big Muffs only do that Smashing Pumpkins wall of sound... Just trying to tell the OP that there's a lot of tones possible with the Big Muff ...

I've never heard anyone say that.

Older (70's) big muffs do have a pretty limited range on the tone knob though, the Ram's Head clone I had from Stomp Under Foot only sounded good with the tone between 10 and 2.

Yeah my Wren and Cuff only sounds good at 0-3 on a scale to 10 on the tone knob... otherwise it just sounds fizzy to me. But I really like how the whole fuzz character changes when you roll the tone back its like a totally different pedal than when the tone is at say noon.

if you pick out some songs, that may help. I was listening to early clutch and I do not hear fuzz on a good deal of their early songs, like from 1995, some of the pure rock fury songs, and on impetus etc no fuzz pedal

but ya fu manchu is all about the muff type clones

yeah. I used them really as just a reference of the genre rather actual sound. Sorry about that. Older clutch is more stoner rock. Beale street and newer I don't think I would classify it as such. Haven't heard earth rocker though.

Yeah. Kyuss has a similar sound. The project is starting. Hopefully we'll have full practice soon once we nail down one or two more members. It's such a different approach to music than I've been taking the past couple years, I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm borrowing a pod xt to do some rough writing and its doing the job so far. I'm just not a multi effects guy so I'll have some boxes soon.

the fuzz on the pod xt seems to be a little cold and stiff but I think that's just the how the pod is with most of its amps and effects

I'm not sure if it's the tone you're looking for, but I like the Visual Sound Angry Fuzz.
