Not High output H/S/H

Boogeyman of Tone
Hey guys, semi finalised the guitar today. All i have to decide is colour but that can be decided later

Axe is Strat

Mahogany/Maple

(Huge:D) Maple neck with a rosewood board.

Hardtail

I'm not prejudiced towards any brand I just want a good sounding axe.

I've decided I don't want super high output pickups for this thing.. a JB would be pushing it as i found my custom pretty high for my liking.

What i want is decent Cleans, cuts through the mix well and a full bodied sound without being mud. I like my mids :)

I would prefer if the hums were tappable.

I play everything from country right through to death metal, but since im currently using a line 6 i have all the gain i need on tap

I'm planning on upgrading my amp around christmas time (the axe is due late october early november - my bday is 2nd november so its half a bday pressie) And i'd be upgrading to an amp with plenty of gain on tap so i dont need a distortion pup.

Re: Not High output H/S/H

If your want to try a different brand try the Rio Grande BBQ/Texas humbucker combo for bridge/neck. I have this in my epi and couldn't be happier. Like you I play lots of different types of music, and I really didn't want my pup pushing my amp. I wanted something medium output, with good mids (reason I didn't go with the C5), A5 magnet, with good harmonics and good bass. BBQ fit that perfect. Not sure about the middle pup. I've never really used one myself.

Re: Not High output H/S/H

Does the BBQ still cut for solo's?

I don't want an overly buttery tone. I want something smooth but not soupy/mushy - it would need a decent amount of uppermids but not piercingly high amounts

Check out the Rio Grande BBQ. It's a medium output pickup with plenty of bass, a nice midrange, and softer highs. It sounds warm and fat without being muddy. It has more output than a PAF style pickup, but is less hot than the Duncan Custome series.

Re: Not High output H/S/H

Does anyone have clips of one?

I'm sceptical about the softer highs thing, my main strat atm is quite bright and i dont want something as bright, but not too much softer either

I've found the thicker the neck the less highs, or maybe its more bass.. well rounder tone you get

And the neck i want is like a tree :laugh2:

Re: Not High output H/S/H

For neck and mid, I sould go with an APH/ APS. The pickup I would put at the bridge would be a CC, but maybe a PG, APHb, or Screaming Demon might be what you are looking for if you don't need mega output. I have a PG in a LP and can say without any qualms that it can get as heavy as you need it.

Re: Not High output H/S/H

I'll have a look at the descriptions of those Benjy

Could people also state the reasons for suggestion and characteristics of the pups :)

Re: Not High output H/S/H

The BBQ is a very in your face pup (a fact some don't like about it), so I'd say it has a decent amount of mids, but of course not as much as some of the high output monsters that are out there. I find the highs very nice. I don't want my humbucker or Epi LP to sound like a Tele, so no it doesn't have those kinds of highs. But is repectable, but not ear drum shattering.

Re: Not High output H/S/H

i say maybe a screamin demon for bridge, as far as i remember it had a great cutting tone and was nice cleans.
for neck?
59?

Re: Not High output H/S/H

If you're up for it, I'd say a Custom/Jazz

Re: Not High output H/S/H

Jazz neck.. i remember really liking that in a c1-classic, which is a similar axe just neckthrough

so thats a deffinate possibility

Custom sounded a little too harsh for non metal styles to me. It was killer for palm mutes but couldn't get "sweet" tones

Re: Not High output H/S/H

Well I use an APH-1 in my Wolfbang, but I swiped the magnet and tossed a A5 into, both ways that pickup sounds extremely sweet and clear.
As for bridge, JB or CC, maybe a Seth without the cover??

Re: Not High output H/S/H

Hmm i like the sound of the clips you did with the CC, and it doesnt have too much bass which is good for me

CC/ something / Jazz sound good anyone?

Re: Not High output H/S/H

In that guitar I would consider a Screamin' Demon (bridge), Antiquity Custom Bridge in middle (may be interesting) and a PG in the neck.

I have a Demon/PG combo in a LP and it sounds great and is very versatile.

I'm going for a PG in the neck of my Gordon Smith LP ;)

How's the mids on the demon?

I prefer the sound of the Demon to a 59bridge I had in my Gibby LP. The Demon to me sound a little brighter than a 59, but also (imo) has more mids. It's quite a bright sounding pickup, but I wouldn't by any means say it's 'icepick' bright. I think the Mahogany body of your GSG would tame the brightness of the Demon somewhat anyway :)
