Noveau jour d'un pedal.

Woot.

Been hunting around for a nice OD that'd stack well with my OCD but would be smooth, not super compressed, and give me a bit of a voicing bump for leads. This fit the bill, quite nicely, has a nicer look than my old TS9 which I never bonded with, and had me chuffed as nuts when I tried it in store today alongside an OCD and a Soul Food. I don't know what it is about the soul food, but I just don't like it at all.

and with the rest of my modest pedalboard

How's it sound?

to my ears, it's a bit more open than a tube screamer. It's still got a similar mid bump, but it's not as obnoxious, and the low end is a bit fuller. Stacks amazingly well with my OCD. Smooths out the OCD's fuzzy decay on the high gain stuff, and with low to medium gain, the two really sing together.

I'm more or less going to use the OCD in LP mode to add some totally open, natural sounding hair around the edges so to speak, as a low-medium gain boost, and then I'll use the East River Drive as a lead boost mostly, but also set for a low-medium gain sound, so I can add/subtract gain without changing channels on my amp. I modded the GE-7 with a monte allums mod that dramatically increased its clarity, openness and shimmer, so I basically use that as a clean boost (always on) - It adds a little extra liveliness to my whole rig, which is nice.

so yeah. First pedal purchase in quite a few years. I'm happy with it.

Re: Noveau jour d'un pedal.

I've been curious about the ERD after reading a bit about it. It's a 100% copy of a vintage TS808 but with true bypass and EHX had Analogman Mike help with the circuit and sorting of the correct parts to make it as correct as possible to the original 808. It uses the correct blue stripe diodes that even the modern reissues 808s don't use. Thus why you like it more than your TS9, the IC, two resistors and the diodes are different and they change the voice quite a bit. I've built a lot of stock and modded 808 circuits but never took the time to track down those correct diodes, thus why I'm curious about the ERD.

interesting. Well it definitely sounds good, worth a try at the very least, and at under $70.... it's really hard to go wrong.

Re: Noveau jour d'un pedal.

Tres Bien!

I saw that yesterday. EHX are going all MXR with a batch of varied little dirt bombs.

Re: Noveau jour d'un pedal.

Cool - I may get one as my be-all-end-all 808.

On paper (as I haven't tried it or compared it to a stock vintage 808) the ERD seems to be the perfect vintage 808 since it changes it to true bypass but doesn't mess with anything else. However currently the be-all-end-all 808 is the Way Huge Green Rhino IMO, awesome pedal if you want a modded screamer with more tweakability. I've tried the Langraff Dynamic Overdrive and the Rock Box Boiling Point and I even used to build my own variation that sat between those two. The Rhino's ability to adjust the bass and mids via knobs makes it far better than having those settings attached to toggles that can only switch between two or three different predetermined settings since sometimes half way between two settings would be the perfect setting. The new Duncan OD is interesting too but I'm yet to compare it to my Rhino to see if that added treble control helps make it better or if it's just on par or what.

Re: Noveau jour d'un pedal.

quick update...

the way i set up my pedalboard was having a bit of an amplifying effect of the OCD's fuzzy decay which I wasn't digging. Additionally, with the ERD after the OCD, when I turned the OCD onto HP mode, it became very thin and shrill sounding.

I ended up swapping the GE-7's and the OCD's places so now it's going GE-7 -> ERD -> OCD and it's a lot smoother overall. Much more musical violin-like sustain, and it took care of most of the HP mode issue with the OCD, although it still sounds a bit wah-like when in HP mode, but not nearly as harsh or as thin as before.
