Now I MUST have a Jem

Re: Now I MUST have a Jem

Took one look at the thread title, and I thought to myself, at last some real Gibsons will be found here, but alas, I was severely disappointed. So for maybe the one other person out of the thousands reading the title and thinking the same thing I did, here are some real GEMS.

Re: Now I MUST have a Jem

Picked up a 90's the other day. First time Ive ever held one. Fit like a glove and felt amazing. Guy wanted 1800.00. It was immaculate. Black wiht green pickups and tree of Life vine inlay.

I'm a convert. For some reason I thought the necks were too thin? maybe they are on later models, but this ones neck was perfect- just amazing.

Lets see, hear about your Jem experiences Sivu PLay.

I've always been a Jackson guy, and been thinking Charvel, but I will own a Jem. Period.

OH man, it was sweeet! It was this one;

Dude...
I'm an Ibanez fan. And a keen RG player.

This is simply one of the best JEMs (if not guitars) EVER!!!
A great friend of mine owns one just like that (and it's sister Universe). Fabulous pieces of art!!!

Great action, amazing tone, comfortable.

And they glow under black (UV) light.

A must have. ;)

Re: Now I MUST have a Jem

5 blue tone turds. You can't be serious comparing the fast action of a Ibanez Jem to one of those low budget Gibsons. I could drive a transporter underneath the action of one of them,. Silly tiny frets. 12" radius to faithfully stymie all attempts at deep bends or fast fretbaord scale runs. No body or neck binding. Sell all 5 and maybe you could afford a real Ibby JEM>

Re: Now I MUST have a Jem

I almost bought one of these circa 98:

Kinda wish I would have, never even seen another. I ended up with a ESP custom shop neck thru kamikaze and a sunburst tiger instead.

I wish I had the tiger now... and that Jem.

ps. I could've had it for $1200 in like new condition. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Re: Now I MUST have a Jem

Too chaotic a pattern, nothing to focus eyes on....distracting. Maybe cool as modern art or smthn, but in a guitar??

Re: Now I MUST have a Jem

I've played about 3-4 JEMs including the 7VWH with ebony, which I prefer to the rosewood version, they are very lustworthy guitars.

The two main factors that keep me from owning a few JEMs are the foaming at the mouth JEM fanbois who drive the prices beyond reason (similar to Ibanez Petruccis----I would love to have the black/white Picasso!) and the rather wild color schemes of some of them (I am a grown man after all.....a hot pink or lime green guitar will not be played by me in public!!).

My most inspirational JEM experience was in about 1991 or so when the Blue Floral Pattern (maple fretboard) with the blue PAF Pros had just come out and I saw some kid prodigy TEARING IT UP at my fave local guitar store playing through the latest and greatest rack. It was like communion with the Gods or something! And this was many, many years before youtube kid prodigies were a dime a dozen. Luckily, they let me (at that time a rapidly learning rookie guitarist) play around with it some and it made a lasting impression as a true elite axe. :D So that is the one I'd most like to have.

I've had my '90 UV7BK since the mid '90s and it is a great axe, although I would prefer to have giant frets like some more recent designs, the smallish stock frets make it more challenging to play (although the tone is excellent). Mine has plenty of hours on it and the frets have worn somewhat, so when I eventually refret it, I will take that opportunity to move up a couple notches in fret size.

Re: Now I MUST have a Jem

^^ The VSBL is nice indeed.

Yeah, I know it's not as big as on the old Roadstars, cos it's carved to a tilt. But you know what I mean :).

Pretty much all of them just have the top four frets scalloped.

Jerry, fyi, you can also get a 7 string Jem now. Same as the 6 but with Blaze pups.

This is a freakin WICKED Universe! I've always wanted the UV7WH, but this makes it less important! I have the Blaze Custom at the bridge in my Uni, which I consider a big improvement for the midrange boost, but other than that, this new model has everything you could want! This guitar with the Blaze Custom or Evo7 at the bridge would be the ultimate Uni to me since it has jumbo frets. :D

Re: Now I MUST have a Jem

I always liked that one, never seen Steve play one live though.

Sadly, he's rarely played the Universes on stage or in the studio in the last 20 years. :( At least he never tires of creating new axes for other people to use...

Re: Now I MUST have a Jem

This one is my favorite of the designs as well, and closest to looking more like a piece of art rather than usual Vai stuff (which I find goofy as hell). He seems like the person who'd wear sunglasses with rims made of solid gold and a fur coat from a Yeti if one is ever discovered.

The stupid monkey handle though! I despise that thing!

^^ Even Vai has said in interviews that the monkey grip is deliberate cheese, something that other people would never do.

He actually uses 7s quite a bit in the studio, especially on the last two albums. But live, yes, he doesn't; that's why he's got Dave Weiner in the band, who's always on a 7.

You got to play a Blue Floral eh? They're pretty rare.

I also like the 90th Hoshino anniv. Looks like it's hewn from a chunk glacier.

And the proto 7 string that was never released.

I also like the UV7PWH :) - very clean and understated.

horses for courses dude. my LP is from that era and it plays excellently. can get ridiculously low action on it.
i knew a couple guys who were using universes (can you pluralise "universe"?) a few years ago and i wasn't that impressed; one of them broke a string once and had to use my JB-loaded LP and it was the best they ever sounded IMO. he loved it.

Yes, Vai is know for being pure class.

I haven't really heard much of his last 2 albums, but am in the process of correcting that situation. For the longest time, he almost completely avoided the 7 strings. He even downtuned his 6 strings (WAY down) at times instead of using the 7s. He is someone who doesn't linger very long in one spot, except when it comes to his White JEMs, he is sold on those!

Re: Now I MUST have a Jem

Yeah. It'd be nice if he busted out an old swirl, floral, or UV on stage every once in a while. He's done some videos with the burnt UV, like guesting on Orianthi's 'Highly Strung' and the Jemini dirt pedal.

Given the amount of guitar tracks songs have, a 7 is probably buried in there somewhere.
