Short version- a '78 through a 65650 amp is the geratws metal tone besides maybe a Dual recto that there is!
A '78 through a 6505! SUBLIME!!!!

T.i gotta say though, the learning curve in a high gain amp LIKE THIS is pretty steep, for me, anyhow, who hasn't ever had such a an amp . Plus its cranked, so there isn't any faking it. Each time i go out on this rig, I get better and better at taming the fire belching beast, yet getting it still to take me where I need to go. Surprisingly, if I get close r to the amp,on top of it, it behaves better than If I try and run away, or hide the guitar so it wont squeal. Im really getting the hang of making this thing not squeal, but it takes practice...lots of working with the volume knob o\f the guitar.
There does seem to be a spot on the guitar..about the 13th fret with the A-d-g-b strings where the feedback/squeal is just uncontrollable..so far nothing to do but turn volume all the way down fast as i can and try and find a little better spot next to amp.. and I had 16 beers, plus some of this is unlistenable.
Eventually I'll have a Dual Recto and this 6505, and run both together through stereo 2x12 EV12l's.

For a time in the 90's I had a 5150 and used a Custom Custom in my Frankenstrat (alder, maple neck/FB). Now that was some righteous tone right there. That rig was great, one of the best I've had.

Dude, you don't need a 78 to make the 6505 sound good. It's a great amp. I used to play one at Guitar Center when I would go there to try out Les Pauls. I chose that amp just because it was setup away from everyone else and had a 2x12 under it. I remember thinking that it sounded pretty good but didn't "get it" at first. However, every time I would doodle my solo stuff with it (not bragging about my guitar skills or anything), someone would pass by and tell me it sounded real good. I guess I wasn't really hearing what they were hearing, but I'm also accustomed to Bogners and stuff, so I did a real sit down with the amp and started dialing it in. After a while I started to get it. It's not a refined sound in any way. It's not going to give you the woody tonewood sound of your guitar or much nuance, but it really does have a great rock/metal lead and rhythm tone. It sounds kinda scooped and bassy but I love the way the lead tone cuts through. Really cool amp. Congratulations.

Probably not your kinda music . . . BUT . . . go to YouTube, and search for :

' ...Black Stone Cherry, Mannish Boy, live in Bonn, Germany...'

I got a 5150 based on that one clip only !!!

YES, the amp can do metal . . . but is EXCELS at Hard Rock 101%

MY old mid-90's block letter 5150 LOVES my Duncan A2P's and cab with Emi Swamp Thangs !

Can not wait to see what my Black Outs will do to this amp, wink-wink !
