So, yeah. Once, and again. It’s a pedal that exists for a pretty specific reason, and it does a fantastic job of it. It’s an overdrive for stacked noiseless Strat pickups into a dirty Marshall. Why would you want to do that? I can’t imagine.

Thats a very good now out of production pedal. They were ridiculously cheap when they started closing them out- 29 dollars IIRC...Your pedal is fashioned after the now very expensive Dod 250 vintage Gray box that Malmsteen uses. They made the yellow DOD250 before this- a reissue of the original Gray Box, and this one you have is a better pedal. I have one of the same one you have Mr. P, , and it's the Analogman YjmM308 modded to 250 gray box specs. I won't probably ever get an original Gray Box- they are now close to 400 dollars and more. Analogman still mods these YJM 308's to exact Gray box specs if you send the pedal in, and he claims the sound is nearly indestiguishable from an old DOD Gray 250.

I’ve always read that the 308 is patterned after Yngwie’s favorite grey box 250. My interest here is in copping his tone from the early solo albums, so I guess the 308 makes a lot of sense.

I also have the sparkly gold 250 reissue that DOD reissued a few years ago. Unfortunately I got a little excited removing some old Velcro and ripped about half the paint off the bottom cover. Good news is, it’s also a great pedal that gets that sound.

I’ve also been curious about the Fender pedal.

Someone in the forum actually gave me one of these along with another pedal, (or pup), that I purchased from them. I love it, but have since done the Monte Allum mod to Gray 250 specs. Thing is, I haven't tried the modded version yet. I need to dig that back out of mothballs. Great pedal. Very underrated.

None were fashioned after the old gray one.

The 308 is electrically similar to an early 80's Yellow 250. These reduced low end response at their inputs which made them sound brighter and tighter. Both use different opamps however. The yellow had a TL081, and the 308 has 4558. Pots were different taper to the grey, and these also incorporated a capacitor with in the feedback loop of the opamp to reduce the chance of oscillation.

The yellow reissue from the late 90's early 2000's was closer to the grey but it has a larger resistor at the opamp output, which prevents the opamp from getting loaded when the clippers conduct, but it also reduces the total signal output. change this and you have something more similar to the Grey. This box also used a 4558. pots of different taper as well, and capacitance in the feedback loop for stability

The Gray were all over the place as far as component choice, with some using ceramic disc capacitors for all signal caps, some with film. The main difference is that used the incredibly crappy 741 opamp, which is part of its sound, no capacitor in the feedback loop, and some had reverse audio taper pots, input capacitor is larger than the one on the 308, and early 80's yellow 250.

I own all incarnations of the 250, even a pretty mint grey

Re: NPD: DOD YJM-308

How are you liking it now? Might have a chance to snag one and always been curious...any comparisons to a TS-808? (Or any TS for that matter).

Clipping is harder and more abrupt than a tube screamer variant. The opamps can be driven to clip in these pedals. It's nearly identical to a later silicon MXR dist +
