NPD! Maxon OD808

Finally got one! Anyone else have experience with these? Maxon says these are just like the old TS808, but then Analog Mike says they're just like the TS10. My only prior Tubescreamer experience has been with a reissue TS9 (which I have enjoyed). I like this OD808 so far, and though the difference is subtle to the point of being almost imaginary (haha), it does seem a bit warmer than the TS9 and with a "softer" grit. I don't sense as much of the low end loss that I hear about with Tubescreamers though. I use it to boost my Marshall and it seems to tighten everything up just right. I guess some may hear low end loss, but I personally just hear tightness. Diggin' it so far! Seems like it's gonna do exactly what I bought it for. :)

Re: NPD! Maxon OD808

Congrats. What is the rest of your setup? (I see you have a Marshall, but which one?)

It's an early '90s JCM900 4100 series 100watt head into an '80s model JCM800 4x12 cab with original Vintage 30s from when they were still British-made. Thanks for asking!

Re: NPD! Maxon OD808

That is a very respectable rig you've got there and not too different from one of my (many) earlier rigs.

Re: NPD! Maxon OD808

I have kept 4 Maxon Overdrives for years. My main OD is the OD820, next is my VOP9 and OD808, and every now and then I like to use my OD9 because it has this cool compression thing going on. I have been thinking about getting an OD9 Pro + but I keep hesitating because I already have a bunch of overdrives. If you like the OD808, you will never get rid of it. Just wait until you get an OD820. It's slightly less aggressive and has a 9v or 18v option so you can get a lot of headroom or a little compression.

Cool! Yes sir, I enjoy this setup very much, along with some of the pedals I'm collecting to compliment it. Definitely not the most modern rig around, but that's what gives it more mojo in my opinion. :)

Haha yeah I'm already looking at getting the VOP9 and the OD820 later on. AND the OD9+ as a matter of fact. If the 808's tone is any indication of where this is going, I imagine the 820 is like the musical equivalent to a hot shower. Haha! Ahem... As I was saying... My other pedals better watch out, because I already see some of them getting replaced by their Maxon equivalents. Lol

Re: NPD! Maxon OD808

Ok, the more I play with this pedal, the more dark & warm it sounds in comparison with the TS9. The TS9 is still a great OD, but the 808 just has something. Definitely less fizzy and retains more low end, plus it gives me that thick chug that I need so badly when I play palm muted chords. It also seems a bit more harmonically rich, which really makes it a keeper. I think she's getting the velcro soon. :)

I can't wait to hear a review on that one. It looks like it employs the same mini tube that the Duncan tube pedals use.

Re: NPD! Maxon OD808

The OD808 does the job nice, i've got an old 79 Tubescreamer, and for myself the Maxon one is the closest to the original i know , have fun with that little "frog".

Wow, cool! That's very reassuring that I made a good choice. Thanks!

I just found this

The tube boost sounds great on it's own but seems to lose something (imo of course) when he mixes in the solid state Overdrive circuit.

I'd be interested to hear how well the tube boost works at pushing a slightly crunchy amp into OD :)

Re: NPD! Maxon OD808

OK, here's the secret to my tone. OD 808 into the rhythm channel of the Twin Tube Classic. There, it's out!

No, mine loses nothing. It's perfect for pushing an amp on the edge of breakup. The problem with PGS demos is that they often use kind of crummy settings. Some of the demos they've done would sound so much better if they didn't use London amps to demo. Not that London amps aren't fantastic but they can be pretty farty, and aren't the kind of amps to use some distortions and overdrives on. I think they were using a Fender amp on that demo, still I didn't like they way they had that amp dialed in or even whatever pickups they might have been using.

I've been using my TBO-9 on my Blues Jr., Engl Raider and Marshall head and trust me when I say it loses nothing. When you max out the gain, boost and level, it sounds a little off, but almost all pedals do the same thing. You're not going to get heavy metal tone out of it unless you run it into an Engl like I do, but you can get some syrupy, saturated lead tones.

I am going to try my Ts-808 into my Lava Box and see how that works. I'm thinking using the Duncan Lava as a cleanish boost, that the Screamer will work well stacked into it.

That's cool then, glad you like yours :)

My days of using just an OD pedal for anything past 'slightly dirty' levels of gain are gone, so that's quite possibly why I didn't like the tone of the pedal in the clip when he wound up the pedals gain and boost controls together.

I did like the sound of the pedal when he used just the boost part onto the amp itself.
