Just returned from my friendly local guitar dealership with something that I should have purchased years ago - a Uni-Vibe. This is the plain black case M68 version rather than the Hendrix paint job JMH3 edition.

Having just A/B tested the MXR M68 against my Red Witch Deluxe Moon Phaser, I am pleased to say that they do not sound the same. Obviously, there is some overlap but the U-V adds a Hendrixy whooshiness whereas the RW DMP just modulates with a slight notch filtering (if you dial that in).

What I have always liked about Uni-Vibe units is the way that they thicken up the sound of a single guitar so that it fills out a trio. The inevitable Hendrix comparisons are there to be drawn but the sound that I have in my head is more like the first David Gilmour solo album.

Anyway. Nice pedal. It has everything on it that it requires and nothing that it does not.

I've been looking into this one for a few weeks now !

Looks like i will be getting one too - thanks !

Re: NPD: MXR M68 Uni-Vibe

Thank you for that link. Quite a wide range of opinions.

The Red Witch Moon Phaser pedal mentioned in my OP offers Phase, Tremolo and a combination of the two. Contrary to what Glenn/Astro asserts in the linked thread, neither of these modulation types sounds like a Uni-Vibe. Periodic swept notch filtering is not the same as periodic pitch variation.

I do not delude myself that the MXR M68 is an exact recreation of a vintage Uni-Vibe.

Re: NPD: MXR M68 Uni-Vibe

IO had an original Uni-Vibe with the separate foot controller/expression pedal back in the early 70's. I was playing with a band in Canada at the time and when I came back home I sold it to the keyboard player who wanted to use it on his piano (which really sounded great, by the way). I was an idiot back then and sold it for $25. I've been kicking myself ever since.
