NPD: Tumnus

I got @dystrust ‘s second Tumnus through the trading post this week (thanks!).

I got to play a bit with it and I’m really happy.

It works well when I run it on clean and (more importantly) when I run my 5e3 a bit dirty (I.e. most of the time). A fair amount of gain on tap, pretty quiet and I have no problem with the bass. A lot of clarity compared with my modded Soul Food.

I plan to compare it to a friend’s Mythical Overdrive which seems to be the go to Klone these days and run it with my amp totally cranked but so far so good!

Re: NPD: Tumnus

Congrats. The Tumnus is a great pedal. I ran mine with a bit less volume, but it's hard to find a bad setting with the pedal. Its really ignored as a Klone.

Thanks! I still don't know how I'll run it :)

There are a LOT of Klones but I think the Tummus has its following. I watched the pedal show and it felt like they really liked it :)

Re: NPD: Tumnus

Same here. This is the demo that made me invest in a Tumnus. Tons of bang for your buck, especially if you buy used. Not to mention, it takes very little space on a pedal board.

Glad you like it. The Tumnus really shines when stacked with another boost or pushing an already dirty amp IMO. That's almost exactly how I have mine set; I have the treble at 9 o'clock because my Mini Jubilee is a bit on the bright side.

I'm surprised the estate of C.S. Lewis hasn't had something to say about this. Tumnus is one thing...but the picture, complete with lamp post...

It looks like he licensed it. If you look closely, there's a Ⓡ after Tumnus.

(R) doesn't mean he licensed use of it from the estate. It means he registered it as his own trademark.

It's harmless enough, but still quite ballsy.

I should have mentioned in my earlier post that I looked up the registration for the trademark, and the C.S. Lewis estate owns it.

Re: NPD: Tumnus

I say this having never played a Tumnus Deluxe, but I really don't see a need for 3-band EQ. Especially when the original sounds amazing for $50 (or more) less.

The original looks a bit crowded to me. I have little sausage fingers that get tripped up when tiny knobs are close together. Also, I trust Wampler not to make more EQ a detriment.

Whether they do or not has no bearing on Wampler's use of (R). Wampler's use of (R) is to protect themselves, not to reference a license that they have obtained.

They have a tiny disclaimer in the manual

It may end up like the Pink Panther from JHS

Sausage fingers notwithstanding, I'm with @dystrust on this one. I think it's voiced wonderfully.

Re: NPD: Tumnus

Yes, it is voiced wonderfully. I have the Deluxe and the EQ is very touch sensitive and usable. With the bass, middle, and treble at 12 o'clock you have the original Tumnus. I do use the "tone" knobs all the time. Big fan of Wampler.

If by "disclaimer" you mean "lie," then sure. The truth is not that the intellectual property of others is being used for demonstrative purposes, but that they are using for marketing. They are using another's intellectual property to earn profit...assuming the estate of C.S. Lewis has not allowed it to slip into the public domain. Them stating that they aren't doing that doesn't mean that they aren't...and in fact, it's kind of dumb, because it provides zero legal "excuse," and all it does is draw attention to it.

Again, it's monetarily harmless, meaning that I'm sure the existence of this pedal is not cutting into the sales of C.S. Lewis related items. But they are still taking someone else's fictional subjects and using them to make their own money.

And on top of it, it's a lame-ass character. :D

The only characters I remember are the lion and that stupid kid who was addicted to Turkish delight.
