NPD X2: Dimarzio Transition and 36th Anniversary PAF WITH FULL BAND CLIPS

Oh man these pickups sound killer. I was nervous about the Transition being too high output for what I wanted from this guitar but it really sounds damn fantastic. The neck+bridge combo is damn good sounding. It kinda reminds me of JP's live middle position tone from Zep's How The West Was Won. I even haz clips:

I just had this jam session today with some friends of mine. It's sloppy and unrehearsed because it wasn't meant to be a demo of anything, just a jam session. But I thought it sounded good and there were a few questions on the Transition's tone, so I figured clips would be better than a wall of text.

These pickups are loaded in my Music Man Y2D (with their Music Man double locking vibrato bridge) with the transition in the bridge and 36th in the neck. I'm using 500k pots with a treble bleed kit and I still have the stock single coil in the middle position. I don't start using the Y2D until about 10:00, and though I use it for the rest of the session, I think as a demo of the pickups you can just listen from 10:00-28:00. The jam starting at 28:00 will give you a great idea of how the Transition sounds for mid gain rhythms though. I cycle through all of the pickups quite often so it would be crazy to make a list of which pickup is being used when.

I'm running through a 68 Fender Bassman and an 80's Mesa vertical 2x12. For dirt, I'm mostly using my Weehbo JMP drive and my Klon clone for the first jam and I kick on my big muff around 21:00 in the second jam, though it does get turned off at some point in the jam. For effects, I'm using a Strymon Timeline and Mobius. The Mobius is mostly set up for a 4 or 8 stage phaser, leslie sim, flanger, or chorus.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Very cool of you to post this :)

The Transition does just fine with very high gain, maybe even a little crisp/dry sounding.

I really like that riff at 10 min, ****s tight

What did you use to record?

And dude that snare sounds great. His ghost notes are nice too. Real clean.

I like the spacey stuff starting at 14min. Those bass chords were a great choice over what you're playing.

How does the 36th compare to say the SH1-59n? I like the SH1 for pretty much clean or gain.

Yep, fantastic band jam recording. The snare does sound REALLy good and your licks and riffs are joyously fresh and organic. Love the juicy tones you are getting here. I listened to the first half yesterday and now I am coming back for the second half.

Great feel and vibe! I love your fearless ability to jump right in with those tribal and funky beats and lay down a sweet riff or set of licks. I love every minute of it.

The drums are crazy good sounding though... how did you do the drum sounds?

Thanks Geoff! Your compliments are appreciated more than you know.

I have to give credit where credit is due - the juicyness you hear in my tone is 80% the new Dimarzios I installed. The Transition is an incredible pickup that has exceeded my expectations. I was a bit nervous when I ordered it - I had originally wanted an AT-1 but it was out of stock in the color and spacing I needed - as it was a bit hotter spec wise than I was interested in. But I can't get over how expressive and organic this pickup is, especially for a ceramic magnet pickup. I will have a full write up on both pickups this week after I use them at band practice.

As for the recording - I am 98% sure that there was no processing of the tracks as my bassist gave them to us almost right after we finished jamming. I detailed the mic setup in an above post. The reason the drums sound so good is our drummer is ridiculously talented. He made that just okay sounding drumset that is in desperate need of new heads (the batter on the bass drum broke and my bassist, who owns the kit, didn't have money to replace it switched the batter and resonant heads) sound so good. Just to give you a different perspective, here is a professional recording that he did four years ago, and he has got much better since then:

The dimarzio transition is a overlooked pickup due to it being a signature model but in reality it is a 36th PAF on roids.
so if you like the 36th PAF but wish it had more of everything then the transition bridge is the pickup for you

Sounds like I made the right choice pairing the Transition and 36th, then.
