Enter... the Catalinbread Formula 5 and the Xotic BB Preamp.

001-2.jpg

I'm really loving both these pedals. The F5 is dirty, nasty, and all around wonderful. Cleans up wonderfully with the guitar's volume. Catalinbread describes it as having a "greasy" midrange, and I must agree. It's a killer pedal with humbuckers, but I haven't tried it with single coils yet.

The BB... wow, I'm extremely impressed. I get all of the hype on this pedal - it's really killer. Probably the best dirty boost I've used. using it with the gain just shy of noon and the volume a bit past unity, boosting my Box of Rock, it gets a killer metal rhythm tone. Straight into the amp, it's a great mid-gain overdrive with plenty of clarity and tons of versatility. Extremely "amp-like."

I'm on my way to finally finishing up my pedalboard. I only have a few pedals left I need to get - I'll be picking up a Cusack Tap a Whirl soon, I've got a Voodoo Labs Micro Vibe on backorder, I'll probably be picking up a Carbon Copy at some point, and when it comes out, I'll be replacing the Deja Vu with the Way Huge Supa Puss.

I've also got cables coming in this week, so I'll be able to clean up the board a bit and put the pedals in whichever order I want. I don't like the way I had to place my pedals because I didn't have long enough cables. Right now, the signal path is: Guitar --> Pitchblack --> Lovepedal Fuzzmaster --> Nobels ODR-1 --> BB Preamp --> Catalinbread F5 --> Box of Rock --> SD Deja Vu --> Hall of Fame. I want to be able to have all my dirt on the bottom, and all my modulation on top, since I turn the dirt on and off more than the modulation effects.

I'm really happy with all the stuff I have, and even happier because I know I'll be finished buying pedals for a while within the next few months.

Re: NPD X2

Congrats!! I have REALLY been wanting to try out the BB!

How do you like the Hall Of Fame? I've been thinking about getting one.

I really like it. It's actually my first reverb pedal, and it's quite impressive. Love the Toneprint feature, and the tone knob is extremely useful. I'm not a reverb junkie, so I can't compare it to anything, but I quite like the Church, Plate, and Room models. They just add a great fullness to my sound.

Definitely try the BB. I'm already EXTREMELY impressed with it. Even if I wasn't, I've had a great time dealing with PGS's return staff. They make buying pedals over the internet extremely painless.

Re: NPD X2

Niiiice. Definitely heard great things about both of those. Especially the BB after Timmons turned me onto it.

Congrats!

Re: NPD X2

Very nice stuff but those colour coded molded cables hurt me!:friday:
LOL

Dude, some times you need the colouration from the ol' Boss style cables, old curly cable w cheapass connectors, or similar. (I always throw '70s JAX curly cord from pedal board to amp when recording cause I like the colouration it adds; long, cheap cables do tend to thin things out to my ears, though)

I was just givin my man a hard time...

I'm still surprised by how many guys use those cables thought to be honest....I guess it depends on your signal path though...I get so much noise from old fuzz boxes and rickety old wah pedals that I need to clean it up anywhere I can!

lol, I hear ya, man.

I have the opposite problem. I use the curly cord and the Maestro PS-1 (not on, just in the signal path) as a tone press to add some dirt to the sound! :)

Thats what I was saying about it being dependent on your personal signal path...I use one of 3 different wah pedals...all of them are non true bypass and I like it that way...I also use a Lava coil cable from guitar to board...it's far more clear than old coiled cabled but it's still not as clear as my straight George L's.

Re: NPD X2

The BB one of those pedals that I bought, sold, missed, and bought again. I've learned my lesson; it's a keeper.
