Note 1: I know it's a sin to make a post like this without clips. I'll try to get something up by the weekend.
Note 2: Anything new sounds cool in the 1st 24 hours, so I waited several months before posting about this.

So . . . I buy I used pup in the Trading Post from a forum bro. (Sorry, can't remember who.) He throws in this YJM308 pedal. I'm guessing because it sounds like crap. No big deal. It's free. I'll check it out.

I friggin' love this thang! Way better than the Soul Food. Dime the Gain control, zero the tone control on the axe du jour. Set level to the mood. As I run up and down the fretboard, I get the same affect as if I'm working a wah. Sweet, sweet distortion. Sustain 'til the cows come home.

I'm running this through my Bogner. No other pedal.

Anyone else play with one of these?

Btw, it's all discreet components on a simple-to-mod board. (No surface mount crap.)

The YJM 308 is great for in front of a hot Marshall too. It IS terrible running into a clean amp if you want a "distortion pedal", IMO. But if you use it as intended it's a great little box. I bought a few of them when someone closed them out...like $30 each. LOL. I have one that is modded by AnalogMan and it's even better, a little more full sounding (and I like the status LED...)

I'm toying with the idea of doing the Monty Allums mod. It looks simple and is easily reversible if I don't like it.

I'm surprised no one else has chimed in on this. It's supposed to be a DOD "Gray" 250 clone. (I think.) Is this pedal that unloved? :onder:

I think people who don't like any version of Malmsteen's tone, or who don't understand how to use the pedal, probably don't like it. I happen to like the thing quite a bit; I run it through a slightly dirty Marshall into G12T75's. It does what it's supposed to do.

I recently bought one of the 250 preamp reissues and I love it to pieces.

I hadn't heard that the yjm was a clone of the "gray" version. I heard that it had more presence or something but that was a long time ago and may have been marketing hype. That model does seem to be either a love it or hate it box but sometimes those are the best pedals to buy.

I'm glad that you dig it, man.

I'd always heard the 308 was a clone of Yngwie's favorite gray 250, for what it's worth.

I've never been a big fan of YJM. I don't hate him. I'm just not a fan.

Having said that, I love this pedal. Set the controls just right, and my excursions up and down the fretboard are like working the pedal on a wah.

As I said . . . I'll try to get a clip up this weekend.

Fun pedal. I have always liked the 250s. I am in need of an OD and the new RI is #1 on my list.

It's not a clone of any of YJM's pedals and it's not the same as an old one exactly.

Check out AnalogMan's site...he will mod a 250 to gray specs...

I've found that, by lightening up on my approach, I can coax some nice Hendrix-ish tones out of the 308. I can make it bright and jangly, or kind of thick and creamy. Yngwie is a huge Hendrix fan, and it wouldn't surprise me if he spent an inordinate amount of his guitar-related free time jamming out to Jimi tunes.

I've always been interested in those but I've never managed to snatch one. I love Yngwies tones and I'd love to try one out and see how it compares to my current dirt boxes.

In comparing the stock version to the AnalogMan gray mod I find the stock a little darker. Honestly they are really close in sound, especially if you are gained up.

I guess YJM likes the 308 pretty well as, IIRC, that is what the built in overdrive on the Marshall Signature YJM 100 is based on and not the 250 DOD gray.

All in all it's a great box and does it's thing well.
