NY Amp Show May 9th

Re: NY Amp Show May 9th

That looks like fun!

Why is it called the NY show when it's in Jersey?! :)

I gotta get a ride sorted out, but I'm already planning on going.

Re: NY Amp Show May 9th

I was planning on going, but I may have a birthday party to go to instead(my Godson). Third year I will miss it if I don't go! Gonna try to get there...... But yeah the NY amp shoe in Joisey???? Whats up with that??

Re: NY Amp Show May 9th

Same reason the "NY Giants" play in the NJ Meadowlands... ain't no more room!

Re: NY Amp Show May 9th

Hellz yeah I'll be there! Gonna get there earlier in the day too... unlike last year where I waited for a friend & got there just in time for the giveaways.

Germ, you got anything new & cool? Sorry I never got back to your last PM... been nuts around here.

Who else is going to the NY amp show in NJ?!

Jerzey... that's one thing, but Piscataway isn't even close to NY... not by a long shot. I can't defend that... maybe if it was in Hoboken or something.

Re: NY Amp Show May 9th

Nobody else attending?

Really?!?

I mean, REALLY?!

oK. We'll have fun w/o you... I'm sure I'll stop by the tone shop room at least a few times. See 'ya there!

A quick review of the show --

Went to the NY Amp Show with a friend today. GREAT SHOW!

To sum up the experience: There are a LOT of great amp and pedal manufacturers out there right now. There are also a LOT of mediorce ones. And there are a LOT of over-hyped/bad/meh/me-too ones out there. I will limit my comments to just the manufacturers that were represented at the show, however. A full list of exhibitors can be found here: http://www.ampshow.com/

Attendance was light, as might be expected from a show focusing on +$2,500 amplifiers and +$200 effects pedals. There were also virtually NO women there -- it was a real sausage fest. :)

HOT PRODUCTS

(This is in no particular order -- just as I see them on the Exhibitor List)

SMF GUITARS. I plan on sending an unfinished body to Scott to have carved. His work is first rate! (www.smfguitars.com)

ANALOG-MAN PEPPERMINT FUZZ. This is definitely on my to-buy list now.

ATTITUBE AMPLIFIERS. Astounding hand-made amplifiers coming from Korea. At 1/3 to 1/5 the price of comparable amps in the US of A, this amp is as good (or better) than any other low wattage, boutique amplifier I have tried.

BROOKWOOD LEATHER. Amazing straps. I will probably get a Double Treble strap first, however, at the same price.

CREATION AUDIO LAB MW-1. These guys also make a fantastic clean boost, but the MW-1 stole the show. Any gigging or recording guitarist should own one of these!

ELMWOOD AMPS. I forget the name of their little 38/19 watt amp, but in Vintage mode, this amp SLAYS.

CAMERON AMPLIFIERS. These amps do everything that the Splawn does, with an even great focus on metal (not as versatile as a Splawn). I was blown away by the depth, richness, and tonality of these amps!!

HERMIDA AUDIO ZEN DRIVE. Perhaps the only 'original' idea out there in boost pedals. Fantastic.

HIWATT HI GAIN AMPLIFIER. Really, really, REALLY good sounding amplifier!

GIG-FX CHOPPER. This pedal gets my vote for Most Unique Pedal of 2009 thus far. I want one!

LOLLAR PICKUPS. I found these pickups to be tonally correct and yielded a great sound.

SOLID CABLES. They make the most lust-inducing loudspeaker cable I've seen, if a cable is able to instill lust, that is. :)

METRO AMPS. I think these are kits. Regardless, they are SMOKING. Plexi-style amps with incredibly fast transients and a smooth, musical breakup. Rock Players Heaven can be had from these amps with ease!!

SOMMATONE AMPLIFIERS. These amps made me forget I want a Bruno Pony 50. Yes, they are that good!! Listening to a Sommatone was like listening to a high end recording of one of the best sounding amplifiers you've ever heard ... but LIVE!! A little on the price-prohibitive side, but VERY tempting amps. This amp with a Rebel Yell-loaded guitar will MELT FACES!!

MOST DISAPPOINTING

CAROL ANN AMPLIFIERS. I still don't understand the Dumble craze. Very meh sounding amplifiers.

EGNATER AMPLIFIERS

METROPOULOS AMPLIFIERS. Same guys that make MetroAmp, but this stack sounded ... BAD!

MAD PROFESSOR AMPS/EFFECTS

VOODOO AMPS. Trace is UBER NICE, but shouldn't be making amplifiers. Terrible.

FRACTAL AUDIO. Not much to say. Modeling still has a long way to go to catch up to an good amp head.

LANDRY AMPS. Not worth any asking price, to be honest.

HONOURABLE MENTION

BRUNO AMPS for donating a 2x10 cabinet for raffle even though they weren't an exhibitor.

PREMIER GUITAR MAGAZINE for sponsoring the show and giving away a ton of swag.

PIGTRONIX EFFECTS for being very cool and making REALLY unique pedals. Even though I can never see myself buying one, I would recommend their product to anyone looking for something truly unique.

WAREHOUSE SPEAKERS

65 AMPS LONDON. 65 Amps didn't exhibit, but they loaned a London combo to Analog Man for their room. Amazing amplifier!!

LAVA CABLE; great DIY pedal cables and other goodies.

I think that covers everything. There were a couple of rooms I missed due to lack of time.

Thanks TO!

I have to ask...what was happening at the AnalogMan booth???

BTW, isn't the Peppermint (and the Dark version for that matter!) just KILLER!

Yer welcome! :)

Well, my friend really liked the King of Tone overdrive. It's really nice, but I didn't think it was necessarily sooo much better than a Fulltone, HBE, etc. Very versatile, however, and definitely reference sounding. Their chorus is also the first chorus I've ever heard that I actually LIKED! :)

It's a must own. If I hadn't already plunked down $150 this week on the HipKitty Oxblood, I would've bought it on sight.

Re: NY Amp Show May 9th

Nice...the King of Tone is great, it's my go to overdrive/distortion box these days, I just love it! As for the AM Chorus pedals, I recently picked up an old Boss DC-2 but the AM Stereo chorus was on my short list and I might still pick one up...

The peppermint fuzzes...thats a whole different deal. I am gonna get one soon but I recently splurged on a couple of fuzz boxes so Iwant to hold off for a bit...but I will be getting one!

Re: NY Amp Show May 9th

The show was a blast... came back with just over 80 pictures. Gonna put them up with the gory details in a thread a bit later tonight or tomorrow. The amp show really needs to be 2-days... its impossible to experience everything in just one. I'll disagree with the "lightly attended" idea though, there seemed to be just as many people this year as there was last year. Good times!

Re: NY Amp Show May 9th

Had a great time as usual, lot's of great players came by to make me want to quit playing;)

Well worth the 11 hour drive....

Bill

I meant "in general". If that's the best our industry can come up with for a show of this magnitude, then I'm very worried about the future of all of these companies!

Re: NY Amp Show May 9th

would love to have been able to go ... this weekend is crazy busy for me every year, so if they don;t move it, i'll never make it

and hellyeah on the zendrive ... never leaving my pedal board .. and hellyeah on the lavacable - will never cable up my board with anything else

Where were ya'll? I totally missed your room... what a bummer!

Way too much for one day. I never got to Landry, Simple or Industrial either... among others. Also never found that "little Japanese amp" which seemed to be at the top of the "have you seen?" chatter...

Just finished sorting & uploading pictures to the photobucket. Gonna have to wait until tomorrow to write something up, way too tired to start now.

Agreed!

The Landry was just meh. The Industrial amps looked and sounded good, and were reasonably priced, all things considered (combo starting at $1,400)

Also never found that "little Japanese amp" which seemed to be at the top of the "have you seen?" chatter...
It's the Korean Attitube amplifier I mentioned above.

Can't wait to see your pics!

Did you attend any of the seminars, Moose?
