NYXL strings

Re: NYXL strings

I think that the cobalts have better tone. More useful mids, not just bright light stainless.

Re: NYXL strings

oh...good to know!

whats with the cobalt strings? dude at the store said they are louder? but when I asked if they push an amp harder he said no.
are they more magneto or something?

Ernie Ball M-Steel strings are more magnetic.

Have you ever tried Ernie Ball's coated strings (to see if those last longer)?

Re: NYXL strings

^^
More magnetic than Cobalts, but Cobalts were developed first. Both types are more magnetic than standard nickel steel strings.

Re: NYXL strings

these NYXL are great so far. Nominally stiffer than EB Slinkies but no enough to care about.
They do feel better...we'll see how long they last, thats the true test.
Ill be back in 1 year with the results...

Re: NYXL strings

ok played these for about an hour...wow! I think they bend farther, sing louder, and stay in tune better than any strings ive tried save for
Pyramid and SOB.

Re: NYXL strings

I love the NYXLs! They're a very similar concept to the Ernie Ball Cobalts, so if you prefer slinkies, you'll probably like the cobalts better, but I'm a D'Addario guy myself.

I've got them on most of my main guitars at this point. They last me longer than the standard EXLs, so the higher price point kinda balances out. One thing I noticed for sure, they seem a lot louder than regular strings.

Re: NYXL strings

well, normally i'm not a big fan of the d'addario's xl, i feel the 10-46 set to feel like rubber on E standar for me, as there was a time in wich i used 12-52 on E stadr, that plus my right hand being like a dumb sledge hammer that can overkill the thick gauges with little pick strokes, i really had a bad time with the xl's being so sloppy, the pro steels weren't any better, they were just harsh ans still sloppy, then i tried the DR Hi-Voltage (yup i'm a dimebag fanboy so) they feel right in place, they were clearer than the pro steels, but warm like the xl's and right in the middle of xl's and pro steels on crspyness.

the thursday gone to my local shop, they ran out of DR Hi-V since january, so i bought a set of daddarios xl on the 10-46 gauge, well, bak on the thursday i went and they still didn't had my beloved Hi-Vs (thanks to the imcompetence of the customs dep) well however they had some NYXL sets, so i went ahead and thought "screw this, gotta see what the fuzz is all about" while i bought a pack, first of all, they look like the biggest most baddas condoms envelope, you just have a set of them and everyone will think they're ultra sized condoms for the beast beneath you pants, so first big point, when opening they dont come with those blue nylon picks with an oversized jazz shape that regular xl's come with, but they have a really cool sticker, well now on tone and feel, they really feel higher tension, and for me that's really a good thing, unlike the Hi-Vs that felt higher tension for my picking hand but softer and grippier for my fretting hand, these things feels really higher tension, for both my hands, they actually feel stiffer than the Hi-Vs, wich for playing on 432hz E 1/4 step down standar isn't a bad thing, they don't feel as grippy but the feel aint bad, also they're easy to bend, way easier than how stiff the feel might suggest.

tonewise, i'm impressed, they really sing better than regular xl's, they're bighter but not harsh rip your ears bright like the pro steels, they're pretty crispy, as crispy as the Hi-Vs.... maybe not, but crispier than regular xl's for sure, also they're a bit clearer than regular xl's and the top has a smooth character wich results very pleasing, the tuning well, they really got on proper tuning faster than the xl's, right now they're not my favourite but... they really aren't that far from my fvourite strings, well time will say how well they really behave for me, but right now i¿m enjoying them!

Re: NYXL strings

well, dunno, maybe ot higher tension, but rather sturdier feel and less fretbuzz , as said, for me they feel easier to bend while at the same time they feel less like rubber noodles, wich is how i feel the xls feel....

Re: NYXL strings

I think the most important thing in strings is to find a set that feels and sounds good to YOU. That's all that really matters, not what someone else likes or says you should like. The cost vs. value thing is very personal as well. For years I played Snake Oil brand strings. I just loved the way they felt and sounded. At that point in my life the cost wasn't an issue. Before that, I played EB Hybrid Slinky's for years and years..... and was happy.

Once SOB was no longer a viable option I bounced around. I recently landed on Curt Mangan strings, the pure nickel. I also have the nickel plated. I like the way the pure nickel feels and plays. They are easy to bend for me, so that's all that really matters. I also like that they're a small company in the US keeping jobs in the US.

Edit. I also recently bought some of the M Steel and Cobalt strings to try, but haven't done so yet. We'll see how I like them.

Re: NYXL strings

are the M strings coated?

the NYXL are nominally stiffer, just barely. But they feel alot better.
more significant I guess you can say. Like when you dig in you can feel the pick
going into the string (not literally but it feels like it)
hard to explain.

I will be using these from now on cost be damned! I just got a new job making BANK so money is not an object any more
anyway.

The package does look cool. I even told the guy thats why I was buying them-for the packaging. He didnt laugh.

The sticker I put on my beer fridge and now the beer tastes better! The head lasts longer and the beer tastes fresher.
crazy!

Re: NYXL strings

I'm always surprised when I hear people say that NYXLs have high tension.

I have CTS and RSS in both hands. My fretting hand fingertips are numb all the time/have nerve damage. changes in tension are very apparent to me now..moreso than before the damage. I did a back to back of fresh xl and nyxl strings same same and it was very noticable to me. The Nyxls have "higher" tension. But Iwouldnt call them stiff like some other string brands are.

Re: NYXL strings

today I got a set of Cobalts.
Interesting that Cobalt is the Co in AlNiCo

also interesting i read this today:
The forces of a magnet are measured in gauss and oerstads.
Gauss is a unit used to measure magnetic intensity,
Oerstad is used to measure a magnet's reluctance, or
a magnets ability to resist demagnetization.

So is it a bit of clever marketing to say Cobalt is more magnetic?
while technically it is because Cobalt has a very high oerstad figure
but its not necessarily a stronger magnet.

anywho I got a set im gonna put on my Broadcaster and compare the Cobalts to the NYXL
they also had the M Steel but I dunno about that....Plus the cobs were only $10, Msteel $12

Re: NYXL strings

same here. The 10-46 set I tried on a 24.75" floyd Carvin felt softer than the previous common XL.

But Iwouldnt call them stiff like some other string brands are.

well, that's why i clarified, they feel "sturdier", for me it's really hard to explain, when fretting they don't feel like slippery noodles, nor rubber, just stiffy, but when i bend them the bend seems easier, also while doing vibrato they softer and more vibrating, but they only feel like that when i want them to, when i want to really ding hard and smash them they don't seem to have as much give and fretbuzz, even when i hit like a possessed, they really let me feel my pick and control my picking with that stiffy reaction to picking, dunno hard to descrive, i will go descriving them as sturdy from now

Re: NYXL strings

only had them on 5 minutes but so far I like the NYXL better. The cobalts are darker which I dont like.
They dont seem any more loud than regular slinkies either.

Im gonna stick with NYXL but make a final decision after playing with these tomorrow for a few hours.

honestly they sound and feel the same as slinkies.
they have a blue hue to them.

Im gonna try the Msteels, I bet those are brighter.

I dont need mids, I play broadcasters into a tweed amp-I got mids up the butt.

overall Im unimpressed.
