NYXL strings

Re: NYXL strings

had them on only a few minutes...so far I like them. Brighter than Cobalts, louder too.
Not crazy loud but noticeably so.
They dont feel any stiffer but I notice my neck has more relief with these on.
I keep my relief very small between .005-.007 and I can tell when it goes up.

They dont feel rough but Ive only played them for 5 minutes.

They are in the running for sure. Its down to NYXL or MmmSteel.
I might use both: keep the brighter set on my broadcaster which is darker
than my Esquire which will have NYXLs.

One thing I noticed is I get clearer note separation which is nice. I do a lot of merl travis alternate bass line
type stuff and having the bass notes pop is crucial or it just sounds like mud.

also helps when i get my Luther Perkins on. being able to palm mute and still twang

Yelp, it's all about finding the right tone match for the guitar/pickup combo.
The only time the actual "feel" matters to me (surface feel, not talking about tension which definitely matters a lot), is with coated/wrapped strings which I hate.

Re: NYXL strings

ive never tried coated strings but I know I would hate them so I dont bother
illogical you say? Yup.

Re: NYXL strings

But, the EB coated strings are coated with enamel, not the "space age" coating that people tend to find undesirable. They feel like normal strings (I've played a set). They sound a touch different but, not in a bad way. A li'l brighter.

Yeah...Cleartones and Dad EXPs are similar to coated slinkys. They dont feel like Elixir nano/poly but IME they do lose in the tone/dynamics department and do feel a little different from standard strings, but not much. I used the exps and the slinky coated for a few years on my Tele. On that guitar pickup/saddle mix, they were excellent.

Re: NYXL strings

ok final results are in.
between the NYXL and M-Steel
the first runner up is.....Miss NY!!!

It was close but the deciding factor was twang on the wound strings,
NYXL has a bit more, as well as or maybe because they are a tad brighter.
too.

M-Steel have more tension than Cobalts.

so, I think, in order of greatness it goes:

NYXL
Cobalt
M-Steel

Re: NYXL strings

yeah, late to the party, story of my life..

Im not a string brand hopper.. When I first started playing, I used Boomers cuz a dude I looked up to said they were the best.. I had breakage issues. Switched to D'ad XLs and have used ever since. Only time I experiment is if I get free strings with something. Anyhow, my box of strings has run dry and Im considering trying these. Ive read through both of the these old threads and figure Ill give em a try.

Seems like more positive than neg and I like the quick settle in and may like the slinky bending..
Question I do have though is whether to try the normal ones or the balanced set. Im assuming with that, all the strings have close to the same tension?
For those who have tried em, is there much diff in tone over the standard set? thanks

Seems like balanced tension is more about feel than tone. Maybe a slightly less overbearing G...

I'm curious to try them, but being more of a 9-46 or 10-52 player I think it's kind of going in the wrong direction for me. (I like stout bass strings and bendable trebles)

Re: NYXL strings

Rotosounds are where it's at. It's all I'll use and I have tried em all.

They have a smoother tone than the XL's that I've been using for over 20 years. They bite a little less but I could get used to it. The roto pink 9-52 7-string set that I use on my 6-string drop-C# axe (low strings and high strings, no 4th) was put on that axe somewhere around one year ago. The guitar has a fixed Floyd and keeps tuning really well.

Since that I have completed a tour and recorded an album with it and used it as the main guitar in that band. The strings still have no noticable feel / wear / tone issues with the footnote that I clean strings all the time like there was no tomorrow. Rotos are not coated whatsoever but heavily outlasted anything in that league I've tried, too.

I started recording a track last summer with that axe that I could not finish at the time. Yesterday I continued it and used the same axe. The difference between the tone of fresh and theoretically heavily abused Rotos is so small that I can finish the track with the same guitar. How's that? Maybe I'm lucky with that but anything else would have broken ages ago or started to produce vibration / phase issues.

The twang makes XL's my fav strings but the regular D'Adds wear after approx. 2 months in my hands so on the long run Rotosound strings kick major ass. I am really really impressed.

Re: NYXL strings

I like the balanced tensions. Ive tried them now in 9s on my SC245, and 10s on my Trad, and in both cases they feel much better than standard dad strings. The standard tension strings are like rubber bands on some strings and re-bar on others. Its very noticable trying them back to back. And it makes you realize how unbalanced a set of standard dads are to the same gauge in other brands like eb or dunlop.

Re: NYXL strings

I couldn't find any meaningful difference between regular Slinkys, Cobalts, and M-Steels, except that the Cobalts broke fastest for me. Tried a set of NYXL's and was really surprised at how they changed the tone. My Schecter guitar (with the Duncan-Designed versions of the JB and 59) had more of a honking sound than before -- definitely less low end. Not sure how I like it, and I'm gonna put my regular Slinkys on after these wear out to compare again. However, these strings just don't wear out. I'm used to strings at least getting a little grimy and broken in after a month or two, but it's been six months and the NYXLs are pretty much the same as when I got them. All the sets I've compared are the same gauge -- 11-48 or similar. That's just been my experience
