i've been looking into some gibsons and i read that they use obeche for some of the fingerboards. first, whats obeche exactly? second, how is it?

Re: obeche fretboards?

I've played it. It looks and feels kind of like diet ebony – a bit less black, and a bit more "dry" feeling. I didn't like it, but I am sure it does the job. Honesty, I'd buy used until they get their **** together. I will guess that these guitars with the non-traditional fingerboard woods are going to have crap resale in the future.

P.S. I do think the baked maple is decent, however. My SG Special has it, and it sounds good and feels OK.

The report I read said the Feds siezed almost $1 million of Gibson's Indian ebony alone...plus other woods. Once the gov't has it, who knows where it'll end up. The way I understand it, if that same wood had already been attached to a neck/guitar, then it would be fine to have it here. So we can buy it on imports, but if American craftsmen build it, it's off limits. I'm sure I don't know all the details, but it sounds ludicrous.

I've played guitars with Obeche boards. It feels fine to me, I have a rather light touch so the feel of fingerboard wood isnt a huge factor for me. If I hadnt been told it wasnt ebony I dont think I'd have thought anything was odd.

I'm not a hater when it comes to using different woods...I just like nice guitars

Bringing this back from the dead to comment on the obeche board on my Jr.

At first I was just OK with the obeche/black obeche. It seemed fairly dry and it did get a minor dent fairly easily but it played well enough and sonically presented no noticeable issues.

As this guitar has started to get played in I have to say I really like the obeche. It does seem to like a very light oiling , it brings out the grain a bit and gives it a little smoother feel. I know a lot of people were skeptical and it didn't do much for sales but I like it better than the baked maple boards I've played so far.

It doesn't sound ludicrous, it is ludicrous. It's inevitable once you let government get involved with production, of anything.
