That looks like a fairly simple circuit. What mainstream OD is it similar to?

That looks like a fairly simple circuit. What mainstream OD is it similar to?

I'm not sure to be honest. It mixes clean back into the distorted signal like a tubescreamer, so you can run it pretty clean. You can also crank it all the way up for some old school fuzz.

I would need to see the schematic for it, but it looks like it's a pretty standard transistor overdriving a pair of diodes - I imagine in a negative feedback loop if it's emulating a tubescreamer. The clean "blend" just looks like (emphasis: looks like) it bypasses the diodes so you get The clean boost from the circuit itself, which is kind of genius IMO. Love that kind of simplicity.

You're looking at about $5 in parts (if that) and Vero board, and then another 15-20 in hardware, so yeah. Thats a great option.

Another idea is to look at some joyo pedals - they go for around $40 on Amazon last I checked and they have just about any style of OD you could care to like/try.

Yet another suggestion is the boss SD-1 - New they go for about 50 so used they should be Well within your price range.

I have a Joyo Vintage Overdrive and a Bad Monkey.

The Bad Monkey has the advantage of separate treble and bass controls and a speaker-emulated output for DI, but the bypass isn't totally transparent. Not necessarily a problem but something to check out if you're concerned about buffered bypasses.

The Joyo has classic TS tone and true bypass. The construction feels a little flimsy but I've been using a couple of Joyo pedals for a couple of years now with no problems.

They both sound great and are excellent value for money.

Well, after I ordered it, I went and listened to some YouTube demos (I know, backwards). After listening, I thought I just threw away $10....but no big deal.
Got to give it a test today and I was very pleasantly surprised. I'm not saying it's the best pedal I've tried, but I could certainly live with using it for solo boosting...very decent. The demos sounded 'fizzy', but with the tone set at min., the drive at 11:00, and the level at 3:00 using a tele into a BDRI clean channel, it was very good.

Don't know how the plastic will hold up over time, but it's sure worth $10 IMO.

You like the TS9, but want budget friendly, and maybe a bit more flexible? Bad Monkey is the easy answer. Can't hate. Great choice, that said, a slightly deeper choice is this:

It IS a Tubescreamer, sounds great, and has the cool "hot" switch. Hit the bay for much win with this.
